Burgundy wines
The Burgundy region, in the east of France, is the wine region with the largest number of denominations of origin per square kilometre. So divided up that it resembles a patchwork quilt seen from above, it devotes its production to two strains only, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
In the Burgundy region, granite-type soils with limestone and clay abound. There are gentle slopes cultivated up to 70% with vines of the noblest strain, Pinot Noir. This results in what is probably the best red wine in the world.
The best white wines of Burgundy can be found in the areas of Meursault and Puligny, towards the south, before Chalan-sur-Saône and Mâcon, where the famous Pouilly-Fuissé is produced.
