Red wine is the most universal type of wine, the wine per excellence, the most consumed and probably the first wine produced in history. Red wine and red grapes are usually associated with: red wines take the color of the juice of the grape, as well as the skins with which are macerated for some time to acquire their properties: color, aroma, body and tannins.
To produce red wine, some of the most used grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo, Malbec, Tannat and Carmenere.
Red wines can be bottled or processed after aging in stainless steel tanks or containers of wood, barrels and vats. The barrel is the most common aging method and those can be French oak, American and Russian.
Red wine is produced throughout the world, although the major producing areas are Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa Valley, Tuscany, Rioja (Spain and Argentina), and Mendoza.
Some countries classify red wine according to the aging, and speak of young, crianza, reserve, large reserves, blends, Garrafeira ... as well as the year of production, the cuvée and vintage red wines.
