Alcohol Abuse in Adolescents Can Affect the Brain

 TAGS:undefined

A recent study by the University of Eastern Finland and the University Hospital of Kuopio has seen a “critical thinking” in young people who were heavy drinkers of alcohol during their teenage years.

The results of the research, published in the journal Addiction, reveal that parts of the brain that develop before the age of 20 may be disrupted as a result of abuse of alcoholic beverages.

The study was performed using magnetic resonance imaging techniques applied to the brain structure of healthy youngsters that were alcohol users during their adolescence. They also tested control subjects of the same age that were light drinkers. Through three transverse phases performed at the same time. Over 10 years, with ages between 13 and 18 years at the beginning of the investigation.

All participants had good academic results and did not show appreciable differences in mental health problems, while drinkers had not been diagnosed with any alcohol abuse disorder. However, significant statistical differences between the two groups were observed.

Among “drinkers” there is a decrease in the volume of gray matter in the anterior cingulate cortex (an area of the brain involved in functions such as regulation of blood pressure and heart rate, and certain functions of higher level, such as reward anticipation, decision making, impulse control and emotion), as well as in the right insula (also linked to the latter functions of higher level).

According to the researchers, the excessive consumption of alcohol can interrupt the maturation process of the areas mentioned, particularly important in the control of impulses and in the sensitivity to the negative subjective effects of alcohol, so that these changes of volume can play an important role in the development of a substance use disorder later in life.

The exact mechanism behind these structural changes is not known, but it appears that some of them may be reversible if alcohol consumption is significantly reduced. And, as always, from Uvinum we recommend – a moderate and responsible consumption of alcohol. Relax and enjoy the pleasure of a glass of good wine without overdoing it.

Tips to bubble lovers

 TAGS:undefined

If you consider yourself a lover of cava, champagne and other sparkling wines, we want to give you some ideas so that your taste for sparkling wine expands and you discover new flavors, aromas, forms and experiences that this type of wine can offer you:

1. Give an English Sparkling Wine a Chance

If you have not done it, we recommend that you do it as soon as the opportunity presents itself. The English sparkling wine has had very good reception and positive trend during recent times and can be found in different places. It is made in the same way as Champagne.

2. Attend a tasting event

If you have never been to an event of this type, treat yourself to a course or a tasting specialized in sparkling wine. You will have fun, you will love it and you will learn a lot of things about the bubbles.

3. Visit a vineyard

It is something you should see at least once at some point in life. In fact, there probably is a vineyard very close to you without you knowing it. Whether in Spain, Italy or France, get lost in some of the regions specializing in sparkling wine.

4. Get out of your comfort zone

It is very pleasing to find a good sparkling wine that makes us “click” to think that “is ours”, but we can not or should not be limited to just one sparkling wine. There are many wines of this type all over the world, why not try some of them?

5. Simply pamper yourself!

Enjoying champagne is considered a luxury and should only be enjoyed on “special occasions”. Put aside those paradigms and enjoy a delicious glass of sparkling wine whenever you feel like doing it.

One Beer a Day May Reduce Risk of Heart Attack

 TAGS:undefined

The title says it all: one beer a day can help reduce your risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. That is the conclusion of the study presented by Pennsylvania State University at the last meeting of the American Heart Association, the world’s largest cardiology referent.

The study in question was based on the analysis of blood samples of 80 thousand adults contrasted with their habits of consumption of alcoholic beverages during each quarter of the last 6 years. These blood samples allowed researchers to measure, among other factors, high-density lipoprotein levels. Indeed, maintaining healthy levels of this lipoprotein (better known as “good cholesterol”) helps prevent clogged arteries, a major cause of stroke and cardiovascular disease.

The results show that people with moderate alcohol consumption, equal to one or two pints per day, maintain a healthy level of “good” cholesterol. This positive effect was more noticeable in blood samples from regular beer drinkers than those with a predilection for other alcoholic beverages.

On the contrary, it is, without a doubt, an argument that supports the conclusion of the benefits of consuming a daily beer. “A reason to raise our arm and toast, although it is probably best to do it only once,” said Shue Huang, lead author of the study.

While this is one of the largest studies in this area, it is not the only one. In fact, in Uvinum we had already talked about the positive effects of moderate consumption of beer on other items: from its stimulating qualities to brain activity and memory, to reducing health problems such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis or aging of the skin.

There is no doubt that this news will delight all those people who enjoy having a cold beer with their friends when leaving work. To all of them: Cheers!

In which countries is it most expensive to buy wine?

 TAGS:undefined

When we travel, one of the things that most strikes us from new places we visit, are the price differences in consumer products. It is easy to find surprises in such everyday things as public transportation, some food and, of course, alcoholic beverages in general. Wine in particular is no exception.

Recently, the company MoveHub have done a study of the average price of a bottle of wine in different parts of the world, making, based on the data provided by the California Wine Institute, a ranking of the most expensive countries.

The result, which comes from statistics of countries on five continents, shows a clear tendency to find the most expensive wines in luxury tourist destinations, tax havens and oil-rich Middle Eastern countries, while in Europe in general, wine is more affordable, except in Iceland, which with an average price of 19.42 Euros, is ranked as the third most expensive country in the world.

Below you can find the top 3 countries where enjoying a bottle of wine may prove more prohibitive:

  1. Marshall Islands. This archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has the record of average price per bottle, with £18,57. Bearing in mind that to get there you have to literally walk half a world, we do not believe that the lucky ones who can afford it matter a lot.
  2. Indonesia. A little closer, but not too much, this island country located between Southeast Asia and Oceania is in second place, with £17,49.
  3. Iceland. We knew the Icelandic cod, but we did not assume that accompanying it with wine would be quite expensive, with an average price of £16,56.

The remaining countries to the tenth position worldwide are Singapore, with £16,51, Jordan, £16,05, Qatar, £15,61, Cayman Islands, £15,18, Maldives, £14,9, Emirates United Arab Emirates, £14,46 and, closing the ranking, Aruba, with £14,18.

Sustainable tourism on the increase in 2017

 TAGS:undefined

Tourism is becoming greener. And this because awareness to preserve the planet is getting stronger and influences in one of the most powerful sectors of the world: tourism.

When we say that sustainable tourism is on the increase this year is because the WTO, World Tourism Organization, has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development to foster the need for effective change in this line.

Sustainable tourism is already a reality and there are thousands of projects that advocate, even in universities. There are subjects about it and specialized masters for future professionals who know how to take for example a hotel or a restaurant towards their most responsible part.

That 2017 became the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development is established by Agenda 2030 in order to change business practices and policies, in addition to consumer behaviours, to safeguard the planet.

During this year there will be a lot of information and projects on this subject and they will act in five priority areas:

  • Inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
  • Social inclusion, employment and poverty reduction.
  • Efficient use of resources, environmental protection and climate change.
  • Cultural values, diversity and heritage.
  • Mutual understanding, peace and security.

In the margin, many developments have already seen the light and every day they fight for the users to participate in them. Regulate spending on water from golf courses and hotels, allocate a part to help the needy, healthy eco-destinations, protection of the coast for ethical tourism, protected green areas, ecological orchards in restaurants … and much more are Just some of the examples that are being made in sustainable tourism. Go green!

The Perfect Pairing: Bread & Wine

 TAGS:undefined

Bread with cereals, bread with wine, dark bread and bread of diverse flavors. Bread is one of the most important and nutritious foods, and you can never miss at good meal, either to accompany your dish or to make sandwiches.

Although it is a grateful food that goes well with many drinks and easy to accompany with other foods, we must know how to properly combine. Black, rye and cereal breads can be mixed with cheeses, jams and also with pates. They are perfect breads to spread everything you want, especially at breakfast.

The whole wheat bread is also good to sprinkle and to accompany really strong plates and dishes. To make sandwiches with tomatoes and sausages, there are several types of breads, such as the traditional chapata that sausages with ham serrano, chorizo or loin. In the same way that the bread of peas is perfect for tortillas and sandwiches of fuet.

The meat can be combined with a red wine accompanied with candeal bread that presents low humidity, and the Castilian loaf. These breads can also be served with fish, although it is always better with loaves of bread (when bought at the bakery). And bread with paprika is especially for seafood.

Bread with wine presents many alternatives. For example the baguette, the best known and sold bread, usually has a delicate flavor, so white wine is preferred along with cheeses and something stronger to contrast flavors.

Focaccia bread can be combined with red wine and also with very fresh rosé wine. Being a traditionally Italian bread nothing beats combining it with an Italian wine, such as the pink Chianti.

The breads that has raisins, nuts and other fruits go well with the somewhat sweet wines and with the cava or champagne.

Wine: the liquid viagra

Although alcohol is believed to reduce a man’s ability to maintain an erection, a new study finds that this may not be quite true. The key is to know what kind of drink is working under this premise. This is, as we will see below, the case of red wine.

These discoveries are the result of a study that has been done for 40 years by scientists from Harvard University in conjunction with the University of East Anglia. It was concluded that middle-aged men who enjoyed a glass of wine accompanied by citrus fruits and berries were less likely to develop erectile dysfunction. This study took a sample of over 50,000 men, who were asked about their ability to maintain an erection long enough to have sex.

“We knew that the intake of certain foods high in flavonoids could reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” said Professor Aedin Cassidy of the University of East Anglia and responsible for the research. However, this study is the first of its kind to be specific in the association between flavonoids and erectile dysfunction, a condition that affects more than half of middle-aged men and seniors.

Only 3 or 4 parts of flavonoid-rich foods and beverages are associated with reducing the problem. In the United States, the most common sources of anthocyanins, flavones and flavanones consumed are strawberries, blackberries, red wine, apples, pears and citrus products.

As always, wine simply does not cease to amaze. In addition to having many other health benefits, in moderate consumption, we spend a good time with friends and family and keep the flame of passion alive with the partner allowing a full and satisfying sex life.

Eating With Awareness

 TAGS:undefined

There are many recommendations on food that benefit our health and are perfectly healthy for our body and in our daily life. However, this is not always as real as it sounds, in fact, it is proven that any food, however healthy, if ingested in excess, can cause harm to health, including water. Here we will tell you about some types of food that are believed to be perfectly harmless to our health but that it will be best to eat in moderation not to cause any harm.

  • Tomatoes and aubergines: these fruits are characterized by containing alkaloid substances that contain psychotoxic properties that cause intoxications, headaches, vomiting and even hallucinations. For the case of the eggplant it is a little more controllable since, when they are skipped, these properties manage to be destroyed generally.
  • Fibre: fibre will always be recommended by any nutritionist or doctor when we suffer problems in the intestinal flora, and it is necessary to consume it to maintain a good digestive system. However, excess fibre can cause blockages in the absorption of calcium from other foods, increasing risks of bone disease.
  • Seafood: it is good to consume seafood because of its high levels of Omega 3 and 6 that provide and that are of great help to our health, the problem is that many of these shellfish are scavengers or scavengers, which absorb all types of contaminants which are in their path. And in the end becomes heavy metals that can be very harmful to your health. In addition, shellfish present purines, which are nitrogen-related molecules related to urea, which can form crystals of uric acid, causing gout disease.
  • Juices: the fruit itself is much better than juice because the latter provides a large amount of sugar in the form of sucrose which, in the end, is divided into metabolism in the form of fructose and glucose. However, over time, the body may have deficiencies in vitamins B1 and B2 due to excess sugars, which, in turn, cause an insulin blockade, and can cause diabetes.
  • Eggs: eggs are very tasty and nutritious, but in several studies it has been shown that the excess of this food can cause increases in cholesterol levels – not always bad, it should be clarified – but, if you lead a sedentary life and with a diet rich in eggs, obesity can occur. A diet of 6 eggs per week is optimal, although it varies for each person.

Wine Pairing for Chinese Food

 TAGS:undefined

How many times have we gone to eat Chinese food not knowing what wine to order! Combining this type of cuisine is possible, both with cava and sparkling wine, white wine and red wine.

The sparkling wines, in general, are the ones that better will accompany this type of cuisine. They contrast the taste of soybeans, empanadillas and rice, of course, in all its aspects. With rice we can also incorporate semi-dry red wines and merlot varieties.

White wines also go well and refresh the palate along with fried dishes, sauces, noodles or seaweed. And also with the fish dished, as well as with the vegetables, which usually represent this cuisine.

Among the varieties in white wines to combine with Chinese cuisine, we find Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as other native white Spanish varieties, which are often similar to the mentioned grapes.

When it comes to pairing with meats, such as the lacquered duck, the chicken or the veal, which are rich spices, a good choice is a young red wine. In this case, the best known wines of Rioja and Ribera del Duero will triumph. Lacquered ducks can be enjoyed with grapes such as Monastrell or Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, among many others.

When the chinese dishes that are somewhat spicy and multi flavored, the varieties Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon blanc are recommended. In addition we will mention that tasting Chinese wines is another way of getting into the oriental culture, not all chinese restaurants have a grand variety of chinese wine, but some do. And in online wine stores and supermarkets are an option to broaden your horizon on oriental wine. Some oriental customs suggest to drink warm wine, of very low alcoholic level. This in fact, multiplies its organoleptic qualities.
