Alcohol consumption could be related with what we feel when we are in love. Not what we say, but a neuroscience study by the University of Birmingham, which states that when one drinks a bit too much, his or her behaviour is similar to that of a person in love. And that thanks to oxytocin, the so called “love hormone”.
Oxytocin is an important brain chemical for several physical and mental actions, which determines some social interactions and the reactions to romantic partners.
The researchers working in this international study concluded that chemical increases that occur in behaviour related to altruism, generosity and empathy, make us more willing to trust others, eliminating social inhibitors such as fear, anxiety and stress.
Thus, some dose of alcohol or oxytocin might influence how we treat others by improving the perception of reliability. But researchers cautioned that they were against self-medication with either the hormone or a drink, consumed quickly, to provide confidence.
In fact, although they have found these similarities, the study investigators do not believe that oxytocin may be used socially as an alternative to alcohol. But they consider it a fascinating neurochemical and, away from matters of the heart, it has a potential use in the treatment of psychological and psychiatric disorders.
Thus, the study shows how many people change their behaviour, and this could provide real benefits for people who have specific psychological problems. Its researchers expect that the university study will serves to shed light on these behavioural measures and open up avenues that were not yet considered in this field.
