How to prevent a headache associated with wine drinking?

 TAGS:undefined

Beyond the fearsome hangovers after a night of which one have a glass too many, some people suffer headaches associated with wine drinking. Normally it only takes one or two glasses for these people to suffer from migraines. This is a more common reaction than we think, so multiple scientific studies have been done with the aim of deciphering the trigger of this malaise.

There is no definitive answer to the origin of these headaches. Some studies suggest that these discomforts may be due to sulfites. Others talk about tyramine or histamines. Whatever the final responsibility, they are all natural elements the grape contains or that appear during the different processes of winemaking, helping its conservation, color and even flavor.

Since the potential detonators are naturally found in grapes and wine – in addition to being essential to give life to those wines that we like so much – we have selected a series of tips to help prevent these headaches.

The scientists and physicians responsible for the studies in question point out that it is necessary to observe variables such as the moment of consumption to be able to determine the degree of sensitivity of the people to these elements according to different factors, and thus to avoid situations of discomfort. Experts say that stress could be a major cause, so it is recommended to meditate on whether migraines appear after an arduous work day, or also in times of relaxation as a vacation.

Also, staying hydrated and drinking in moderation is a basic way to prevent headaches associated with wine and other alcoholic beverages; Even an effective method to avoid hangovers the next day. Complementarily, experts also advise taking an antihistamine to block the symptoms of discomfort.

Preserving and Decanting: Wine Innovations

TAGS:undefinedDrinking wine has always been an art. A sort of way of living daily life in its purest and deepest flavour. It is well known that a glass of wine, or even two, per day, is healthy, but the way of drinking and enjoying has been changing during the last years. That’s why we have to find new ways of taking the pleasure of tasting a good wine, in order to avoid experiencing the boring modes ingrained so far in the modern society costumes.

Sometimes we just want a glass of wine at dinner without drinking the whole bottle. But after two days, the wine will go bad. This is the part where you and I have to rely on intelligent systems that ensure the maintenance of our dearest wines. And then I discovered Kickstarter:

First of all, we could have a different and alternative approach to the consumption of our favourite drinks. Thus, the first step is to find a different way of preserving wine. The most interesting and innovating idea is Halo, a tool invented by the company ZOS which has been trying to change the way of enjoying wines. The name stands for Zero Oxygen Solutions. The aim of Halo is not to spoil a good bottle of wine that hasn’t been finished and had too much oxygen inside before the next use. We’re talking about a wine preserver that eliminates 100% of the oxygen to prevent the wine from changing or even ruining your wine, an amazing revolution in the world of wines. ZOS is currently running a crowdfunding to finance their project on Kickstarter

Another part of enjoying wine properly, besides conserving it correctly, is the decanting part. A good decanter is an important instrument to avoid the waste of precious drops of wine and, above all, the presence of oxygen that might damage the flavour of our favourite drink. Actually, as pointed by a recent study made by the UK Government, we throw away up to 50 millions litres of wine annually. This means a huge waste of proper wine that often turns to vinegar. Regarding this issue, Eto comes at rescue: we’re talking about a design wine decanter that gives you the freedom to enjoy wine in your house without wasting a drop. Its system uses a seal to keep wine perfectly fresh for at least 12 days, as proven by several laboratory tests. Another very cool crowdfunding project at Kickstarter.

Drink with your friends – It’s healthy now

 TAGS:undefined

Drinking is a social act that has become more and more popular to do in good company. Certain studies show that social drinkers have more friends and receive more emotional support in various life situations.

The social consumption of alcohol can have a great effect on the well-being of people. It is linked to social activities, such as laughter, singing and dancing. With this, we strengthen our social ties.

Over the years, the link between alcohol and the release of endorphins has also been demonstrated, which is especially relevant. But only when consumed in moderation. In fact, the activation of endorphins not only makes us more relaxed but also seems to tune the immune system.

The fact that drinking continues to be a social fact is significant, and this is because it brings two potential social benefits: One is that moderate alcohol consumption increases psychological well-being and, directly or indirectly, promotes the construction of close personal ties and supports social bonds.

Recent research has shown that low or moderate levels of alcohol consumption may have beneficial effects on cognition and that this may include social cognition. That is to say, if you cultivate a healthy attitude towards alcohol consumption, not only do you avoid abuse but also give a positive example to friends and family.

Tips for moderate drinking

  • Combine the drink with food and tapas, especially when you go out with friends.
  • Mix it up with non-alcoholic beverages like water between each consumption.
  • Drink quality wine, experiment with new flavours to enter the world of pairing.
  • Take vitamin supplements with folic acid, especially if you’re a woman, because alcohol consumption lowers your levels.
  • Do not drink alone.
  • Do not drink if you are planning to drive or you are in situations of risk or at work.

How to drink like a rock star

During a long and crazy night in a bar in London, at the end of the ’90s, Liam Gallagher, Oasis lead singer, and Huey Morgan, Fun Loving Criminals frontman, became very good friends. Who was responsible? A mutual friend called Jack Daniel’s, one of the best-rated whiskies in the world, elaborated in Tennessee, USA. Actually, whisky was the favourite drink of Lemmy Kilmister too: the founder of Motörhead ‘created’ the Jack and coke long drink, mixing Jack Daniels with Coca-Cola. An invention that became a classic drink at every party nowadays.

The festival of Glastonbury is one of the most important events of the British summer and takes place from the 21th to the 25th of June. The line-up is really interesting: headliners are world stars like Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Alt-J and Liam Gallagher, who’s now really concentrating on promoting his new solo album. The Axl Rose cocktail, obviously named after the Guns’ n Roses singer, is composed by Champagne, cranberry juice and vodka. A huge drink for long rock nights when you need to stay awake and strong. A guarantee of taste, pleasure and booze. But careful, the part of staying awake only works if you don’t drink too much of it.

10 Things About Cabernet Sauvignon You Didn’t Know

 TAGS:undefined

There is no doubt that Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most talked about grape varieties when it comes to red wines. This strain which comes from the French city of Bordeaux in the 17th century is the result of the crossing between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, hence its name. But there is so much more to the delicious grape, read more about it here:

  1. Cabernet Sauvignon was the world’s most cultivated variety until the 1990s when the Merlot took over.
  2. It grows very well in very different climates. It’s so noble that it has expanded non-stop throughout the rest of Europe and in the considered countries of the New World (United States, Chile, New Zealand, and Australia).
  3. Wineries in the Napa Valley in California pay more for these grapes than for other varieties in the area. This being very ironic because it’s one of the most produced there, without diminishing its value and price.
  4. It’s the most cultivated grape in Chile. The cold breezes of the Pacific Ocean and the induction effect of the Andes result in wines that are very similar to the reds of Bordeaux. Even French wineries have invested in the region because of its potential.
  5. The red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon have a lot of body, structure and strong tannins, so it is ideal to pair it with grilled red meats, rabbit, wild boar, lamb and stews, among others.
  6. The whole world loves this variety and China is no exception. Recently a report was released that stated that the Chinese are the biggest consumers of red wine in the world and the Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most popular grapes in this country.
  7. In the United States, it has its own official day: the Thursday before Labor Day, which is celebrated the first Monday of September.
  8. Other names that it’s known for are Vidure, Petit Vidure, Petit Cabernet.
  9. It’s the grape variety that has more reviews in the database of Wine Spectator’s, about 24,000 tasting notes dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon.
  10. It’s said that the word “Sauvignon” comes from the French “sauvage”, which translates as “wild”, and currently suggests that it was a grape so noble that it grew wild and free in France.

Resveratrol: Could Also Help against Infertility

 TAGS:undefined

Resveratrol, a polyphenol found in grape skins and therefore in wine, has been prooved by a scientific study to be very beneficial against a hormonal problem that 10% of women of reproductive age around the world suffers from: Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. This is according to the study published in the Endocrine Society Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

The endocrine problem causes women to produce higher levels of testosterone and other androgen hormones such as dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, DHEAS, which can cause infertility, menstrual irregularities and weight gain, as well as increase risks of diabetes

The study was conducted at a university in Poland where 30 women diagnosed with PCOS underwent tests where one group was given a resveratrol supplement while the other group was given a placebo.

After 3 months of the study, women who consumed resveratrol showed a reduction in testosterone and DHEAS levels by 23.1% and 22.2%, respectively, while the placebo group saw a 2.9% and 10.5% increase. In addition, women under resveratrol showed increased insulin sensitivity throughout the study.

“There are not many treatments for PCOS, and there are those that reduce the ability to conceive,” explains Antoni Duleba of the University of San Diego, “however, resveratrol is a natural substance that does not appear to show any side effects.” “Although it is too early to know whether this treatment will lead to the complete restoration of regular menstrual cycles or if fertility will improve, we have faith that it will soon and we will be safe. The bad news is that to get the resveratrol administered during the test would need to drink 100 to 200 liters of wine a day,” concluded Duleba.

We know that the consumption of resveratrol and other antioxidants contained in red wine can be very beneficial to our health, as long as it is consumed moderately. In the long run, and as more studies continue to confirm the benefits of wine, it is better to continue drinking not to be at risk.

Do you know of Dom Pérignon?

 TAGS:undefined

Dom Pierre Perignon was born in the region of Saint-Menehould, France, in 1638. He is credited with the creation of today’s famous sparkling wines and also of using the cork to cover the bottles. Dom Pierre had severe eye problems, which made his other senses sharpened.

At the age of 29 he was transferred from a convent of monks to the abbey of Hautvilliers, in Champagne, where he was in charge of taking care of the basements of the cellar. One day in 1670 he heard that one of the bottles exploded. With his curiosity, he went to the scene and, while he was on all fours and touched the ground, he managed to taste the liquid of these bottles, which at first he found strange. Motivated by his thirst for knowledge and research, he prepared to open and taste the other bottles, exclaiming at the same time, according to the legend: “I am drinking stars!”

Of course, those stars were nothing other than the air bubbles that had formed due to the fermentation of the sugars and yeasts that were reactivated that day. He knew that the bottles of that crop were not completely resistant and he began to wonder what would happen if they were. And if the bubbles would remain for a longer time using suitable bottles.

Dom Perignon wasted no time and prepared to make stronger bottles. For this, the monk found a serious problem: the cap. The ones used before were made with wax, but he knew that they would not be good enough to achieve a good result and, thus, remembering to have once seen corks of used corks in travelers’ canteens, decided to opt for that way, adding the Peculiar crown of wires that until today we can see.

Such was his research to create the “drink of the stars” that also was in charge of selecting the specific strains to elaborate his product and to have a result of very good quality, which, to date, continues to reproduce strict standards. Dom Pierre Perignon is, therefore one of the most influential people, important and remembered in the vast world of wine.
