Wine: the liquid viagra

Although alcohol is believed to reduce a man’s ability to maintain an erection, a new study finds that this may not be quite true. The key is to know what kind of drink is working under this premise. This is, as we will see below, the case of red wine.

These discoveries are the result of a study that has been done for 40 years by scientists from Harvard University in conjunction with the University of East Anglia. It was concluded that middle-aged men who enjoyed a glass of wine accompanied by citrus fruits and berries were less likely to develop erectile dysfunction. This study took a sample of over 50,000 men, who were asked about their ability to maintain an erection long enough to have sex.

“We knew that the intake of certain foods high in flavonoids could reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” said Professor Aedin Cassidy of the University of East Anglia and responsible for the research. However, this study is the first of its kind to be specific in the association between flavonoids and erectile dysfunction, a condition that affects more than half of middle-aged men and seniors.

Only 3 or 4 parts of flavonoid-rich foods and beverages are associated with reducing the problem. In the United States, the most common sources of anthocyanins, flavones and flavanones consumed are strawberries, blackberries, red wine, apples, pears and citrus products.

As always, wine simply does not cease to amaze. In addition to having many other health benefits, in moderate consumption, we spend a good time with friends and family and keep the flame of passion alive with the partner allowing a full and satisfying sex life.

Eating With Awareness

There are many recommendations on food that benefit our health and are perfectly healthy for our body and in our daily life. However, this is not always as real as it sounds, in fact, it is proven that any food, however healthy, if ingested in excess, can cause harm to health, including water. Here we will tell you about some types of food that are believed to be perfectly harmless to our health but that it will be best to eat in moderation not to cause any harm.

  • Tomatoes and aubergines: these fruits are characterized by containing alkaloid substances that contain psychotoxic properties that cause intoxications, headaches, vomiting and even hallucinations. For the case of the eggplant it is a little more controllable since, when they are skipped, these properties manage to be destroyed generally.
  • Fibre: fibre will always be recommended by any nutritionist or doctor when we suffer problems in the intestinal flora, and it is necessary to consume it to maintain a good digestive system. However, excess fibre can cause blockages in the absorption of calcium from other foods, increasing risks of bone disease.
  • Seafood: it is good to consume seafood because of its high levels of Omega 3 and 6 that provide and that are of great help to our health, the problem is that many of these shellfish are scavengers or scavengers, which absorb all types of contaminants which are in their path. And in the end becomes heavy metals that can be very harmful to your health. In addition, shellfish present purines, which are nitrogen-related molecules related to urea, which can form crystals of uric acid, causing gout disease.
  • Juices: the fruit itself is much better than juice because the latter provides a large amount of sugar in the form of sucrose which, in the end, is divided into metabolism in the form of fructose and glucose. However, over time, the body may have deficiencies in vitamins B1 and B2 due to excess sugars, which, in turn, cause an insulin blockade, and can cause diabetes.
  • Eggs: eggs are very tasty and nutritious, but in several studies it has been shown that the excess of this food can cause increases in cholesterol levels – not always bad, it should be clarified – but, if you lead a sedentary life and with a diet rich in eggs, obesity can occur. A diet of 6 eggs per week is optimal, although it varies for each person.

Drinking alcohol with moderation is healthy

TAGS:undefinedThe phrase “alcohol is good for health” that you often come to hear does not mean that it is entirely true. In fact, the scientific community has discussed this issue for a long time and although some of their studies have been successful, there is still a huge controversy about these results and the community is divided into two blocks. Of course, it goes without saying that a moderate consumption helps the heart function, but the big question is: what do we mean by “moderate”?

According to experts, it’s ideal to consume two glasses of wine per day if you are under the age of 65 and reduce that amount by half if you’re over 65. A drink or a glass a day is equivalent to 350ml of beer, 148ml of wine or 44ml of any distillate.

Among the numerous benefits that we can find here, there is the reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, gallstones and various cardiac symptoms.

The heart benefits from specific antioxidants in the wines which, in general, help our entire cardiovascular system. Statistics show that active people who drink wine moderately are 50% less likely to develop heart disease compared with persons who are stuck all day.

In conclusion, drinking alcohol moderately will bring us long-term health benefits, considering that we drink moderately. Although, as everyone says, it is true that alcohol in large quantities can and will harm your health, reaching pancreatic, cirrhosis, hypertension, various types of cancer, depression and alcoholism. Remember, alcohol can have positive effects on your health consumed in moderation. But this doesn’t mean that you have to start drinking if you usually don’t.

Wine Pairing for Chinese Food

 TAGS:undefined

How many times have we gone to eat Chinese food not knowing what wine to order! Combining this type of cuisine is possible, both with cava and sparkling wine, white wine and red wine.

The sparkling wines, in general, are the ones that better will accompany this type of cuisine. They contrast the taste of soybeans, empanadillas and rice, of course, in all its aspects. With rice we can also incorporate semi-dry red wines and merlot varieties.

White wines also go well and refresh the palate along with fried dishes, sauces, noodles or seaweed. And also with the fish dished, as well as with the vegetables, which usually represent this cuisine.

Among the varieties in white wines to combine with Chinese cuisine, we find Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as other native white Spanish varieties, which are often similar to the mentioned grapes.

When it comes to pairing with meats, such as the lacquered duck, the chicken or the veal, which are rich spices, a good choice is a young red wine. In this case, the best known wines of Rioja and Ribera del Duero will triumph. Lacquered ducks can be enjoyed with grapes such as Monastrell or Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, among many others.

When the chinese dishes that are somewhat spicy and multi flavored, the varieties Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon blanc are recommended. In addition we will mention that tasting Chinese wines is another way of getting into the oriental culture, not all chinese restaurants have a grand variety of chinese wine, but some do. And in online wine stores and supermarkets are an option to broaden your horizon on oriental wine. Some oriental customs suggest to drink warm wine, of very low alcoholic level. This in fact, multiplies its organoleptic qualities.

Introduction to Croatian Wines

TAGS:undefinedIn the recent years, Croatia experienced a boom in tourism, which in turn has brought its wines to an unexpected level of international recognition. With a long history of wine production, comparable to that of Mediterranean countries with a great tradition, Croatian wines were once well known, but Ottoman invasions, the phylloxera, world wars, communism and conflicts in the former Yugoslavia have decelerated their spread.

For decades, however, Croatian wine production was divided into “coastal” and “continental” regions. A few years ago, a group of producers, sommeliers and experts created a new system that highlights four regions with 12 subregions and 66 appellations. Croatia has 64 local grape varieties with a significant presence of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay.

Dalmatia

In the most Southern region with a sunny and warm climate, the weather is ideal for rich and fruity white wines made of the autochthone Pošip, Debit and Maraština grapes. Red wines include varieties such as Babic and Plavac Mali from remarkable appellations such as from the peninsula of Peljesac and the subregions of Dingac and Postup.

Istria and Kvarner

Located in the Northwest of the country, the region has been known as “the other Tuscany”, and includes the islands of Kvarner Bay. The zone is also known for its refreshing white wines, ideal for fish and seafood, processed with Malvasia Istrienne and Zlahtina. The red wines are mainly based on Teran and some international varieties.

Terres Hautes

The region in the centre of the country, near the border with Slovenia and Hungary, produces Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay, as well as some red wines from Pinot Noir grapes, some excellent sweet wines and ice cream.

Slavonia and Danube

Finally, the region of Slavonia and the Danube is known for its dry white wine coming from Grasevina grapes, also known as Welschriesling or Riesling Italico. There, we can also find white wines made of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, some red Blaufränkisch and other international varieties.

Cheers or better…Živjeli!

How to prevent a headache associated with wine drinking?

 TAGS:undefined

Beyond the fearsome hangovers after a night of which one have a glass too many, some people suffer headaches associated with wine drinking. Normally it only takes one or two glasses for these people to suffer from migraines. This is a more common reaction than we think, so multiple scientific studies have been done with the aim of deciphering the trigger of this malaise.

There is no definitive answer to the origin of these headaches. Some studies suggest that these discomforts may be due to sulfites. Others talk about tyramine or histamines. Whatever the final responsibility, they are all natural elements the grape contains or that appear during the different processes of winemaking, helping its conservation, color and even flavor.

Since the potential detonators are naturally found in grapes and wine – in addition to being essential to give life to those wines that we like so much – we have selected a series of tips to help prevent these headaches.

The scientists and physicians responsible for the studies in question point out that it is necessary to observe variables such as the moment of consumption to be able to determine the degree of sensitivity of the people to these elements according to different factors, and thus to avoid situations of discomfort. Experts say that stress could be a major cause, so it is recommended to meditate on whether migraines appear after an arduous work day, or also in times of relaxation as a vacation.

Also, staying hydrated and drinking in moderation is a basic way to prevent headaches associated with wine and other alcoholic beverages; Even an effective method to avoid hangovers the next day. Complementarily, experts also advise taking an antihistamine to block the symptoms of discomfort.

Preserving and Decanting: Wine Innovations

TAGS:undefinedDrinking wine has always been an art. A sort of way of living daily life in its purest and deepest flavour. It is well known that a glass of wine, or even two, per day, is healthy, but the way of drinking and enjoying has been changing during the last years. That’s why we have to find new ways of taking the pleasure of tasting a good wine, in order to avoid experiencing the boring modes ingrained so far in the modern society costumes.

Sometimes we just want a glass of wine at dinner without drinking the whole bottle. But after two days, the wine will go bad. This is the part where you and I have to rely on intelligent systems that ensure the maintenance of our dearest wines. And then I discovered Kickstarter:

First of all, we could have a different and alternative approach to the consumption of our favourite drinks. Thus, the first step is to find a different way of preserving wine. The most interesting and innovating idea is Halo, a tool invented by the company ZOS which has been trying to change the way of enjoying wines. The name stands for Zero Oxygen Solutions. The aim of Halo is not to spoil a good bottle of wine that hasn’t been finished and had too much oxygen inside before the next use. We’re talking about a wine preserver that eliminates 100% of the oxygen to prevent the wine from changing or even ruining your wine, an amazing revolution in the world of wines. ZOS is currently running a crowdfunding to finance their project on Kickstarter

Another part of enjoying wine properly, besides conserving it correctly, is the decanting part. A good decanter is an important instrument to avoid the waste of precious drops of wine and, above all, the presence of oxygen that might damage the flavour of our favourite drink. Actually, as pointed by a recent study made by the UK Government, we throw away up to 50 millions litres of wine annually. This means a huge waste of proper wine that often turns to vinegar. Regarding this issue, Eto comes at rescue: we’re talking about a design wine decanter that gives you the freedom to enjoy wine in your house without wasting a drop. Its system uses a seal to keep wine perfectly fresh for at least 12 days, as proven by several laboratory tests. Another very cool crowdfunding project at Kickstarter.

Drink with your friends – It’s healthy now

 TAGS:undefined

Drinking is a social act that has become more and more popular to do in good company. Certain studies show that social drinkers have more friends and receive more emotional support in various life situations.

The social consumption of alcohol can have a great effect on the well-being of people. It is linked to social activities, such as laughter, singing and dancing. With this, we strengthen our social ties.

Over the years, the link between alcohol and the release of endorphins has also been demonstrated, which is especially relevant. But only when consumed in moderation. In fact, the activation of endorphins not only makes us more relaxed but also seems to tune the immune system.

The fact that drinking continues to be a social fact is significant, and this is because it brings two potential social benefits: One is that moderate alcohol consumption increases psychological well-being and, directly or indirectly, promotes the construction of close personal ties and supports social bonds.

Recent research has shown that low or moderate levels of alcohol consumption may have beneficial effects on cognition and that this may include social cognition. That is to say, if you cultivate a healthy attitude towards alcohol consumption, not only do you avoid abuse but also give a positive example to friends and family.

Tips for moderate drinking

  • Combine the drink with food and tapas, especially when you go out with friends.
  • Mix it up with non-alcoholic beverages like water between each consumption.
  • Drink quality wine, experiment with new flavours to enter the world of pairing.
  • Take vitamin supplements with folic acid, especially if you’re a woman, because alcohol consumption lowers your levels.
  • Do not drink alone.
  • Do not drink if you are planning to drive or you are in situations of risk or at work.

How to drink like a rock star

During a long and crazy night in a bar in London, at the end of the ’90s, Liam Gallagher, Oasis lead singer, and Huey Morgan, Fun Loving Criminals frontman, became very good friends. Who was responsible? A mutual friend called Jack Daniel’s, one of the best-rated whiskies in the world, elaborated in Tennessee, USA. Actually, whisky was the favourite drink of Lemmy Kilmister too: the founder of Motörhead ‘created’ the Jack and coke long drink, mixing Jack Daniels with Coca-Cola. An invention that became a classic drink at every party nowadays.

Since rock’n roll was born, alcohol has always been the most consumed product during the night between a concert and another. And in the summer season when festivals are marking the flow of time, you want to know how to drink like a rockstar.

The festival of Glastonbury is one of the most important events of the British summer and takes place from the 21th to the 25th of June. The line-up is really interesting: headliners are world stars like Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Alt-J and Liam Gallagher, who’s now really concentrating on promoting his new solo album. Talking about whisky loving rockstars – did you know that Dave Grohl, frontman of Foo Fighters loves Brennivin, a typical eau de vie from Iceland.

And talking about rock stars, we can’t avoid mentioning one of the greatest on earth: Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stones frontman has always marked the trends of drinking for years and his passion for vodka is well-known. Actually one of his favourite cocktails is vodka mixed with orange and pineapple juice. Something similar to what Keith Richards, the band’s guitarist, prefers a cocktail called “Nuclear Waste”, that is vodka mixed with orange, cranberry juice and Fanta.

Going back to the United States, we can find one of the latest examples of cocktails that refer properly to a rockstar with his name. The Axl Rose cocktail, obviously named after the Guns’ n Roses singer, is composed by Champagne, cranberry juice and vodka. A huge drink for long rock nights when you need to stay awake and strong. A guarantee of taste, pleasure and booze. But careful, the part of staying awake only works if you don’t drink too much of it.
