According to a recent research conducted by the UK and USA, the wine and grapes in general are “super sexual” foods that are able to help to prevent erectile dysfunction. This is another good thing to add to the list of advantages that wine provides to our health such as the cardiovascular system protection and memory improvement.
The research, conducted by Harvard University and East Anglia University teams, has been published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and revealed that middle-aged men who drank and ate foods such as red wine, berries and citrus fruits were 10% less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction due to the presence of flavonoids.
These substances are natural pigments that help protect the body from damage caused by oxidizing agents such as ultraviolet rays or environmental pollution and thus also help prevent some diseases. In this sense, beverages such as wine and tea contain high levels of flavonoids, which are also present in fruits and vegetables.
To conduct the study, more than 50,000 test results were taken, on which men were asked their ability to have and maintain an erection. They were tested every four years, gathering all kinds of information such as their daily diet, weight, physical activity, caffeine intake and other habits like tobacco.
One third of the population reported suffering erectile dysfunction during the study, but those with a diet rich in anthocyanins and flavonoids were less likely to suffer from it. On the other hand, men who maintained an active physical activity like walking up to 5 hours per week, combined with a diet rich in flavonoids, had a lower rate of erectile dysfunction.
Professor from East Anglia University Aedin Cassidy explained: “We examined six major types of flavonoids commonly consumed and found that 3 in particular -anthocyanins, flavanones and flavans- are beneficial.” He concluded: “men who regularly consume foods rich in these flavonoids are 10% less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction”.
