Is it important to be innovative about Champagne?

The drink business is slightly more complex than the other industries, because to innovate something, it has to be planned starting years in advance, when the fruits are planted. For champagne, it is no different, since your marketing campaigns have to be foreseen from up to 3 years before. Generally, these plans go in the direction of product packaging and specific techniques to reach younger audiences, maintaining the premium style of the beverage itself. Lynn Murray, marketing director at Hatch Mansfield, explains in an article in The Drink Business, He assures that among the challenges one has to achieve a good enough exterior to attract and catch the young but also following and respecting the great variety of laws of appeal that exist for these types of drinks.

Oliver Legrand, director of marketing and communications at Nicolas Feuillatte, has a different vision because although he agrees that the best thing that can be done is the innovation of the packaging, we must think of adding a plus value that denotes excellence and prestige. A few years ago they launched a set of 3 drinks in which, instead of just creating a luxurious gift package, hired the best chefs and created a complete menu to match their new creations, providing a unique experience for diners and people who bought the product.

Terence Kenny, director of exports for Champagne Pannier, adds: “Innovation can come in different forms, whether it be creating low-dose stewed drinks for seafood, pink candies for tea afternoons and desserts or red forts to accompany meats, in Pannier We have all these to offer and it is our main advantage. “Innovation, in short, can be presented as a well-diversified product portfolio so that consumers have options when purchasing the champagne of their choice”.

And what is the reason for this debate? The increase in the audience and young population has been key to initiate a search for Champagne innovation. Wineries and wines from Penedès

The Penedès wine region is probably one of the most characteristic and recognized of Catalunya, especially as the main place of production of cava, Catalan sparkling wine par excellence.

But in this Designation of Origin we can find more than cava, since in its over 27,000 hectares of vineyards there are produced grapes intended for the elaboration of white, rosé and, in a lesser extent, red wines. The extension of vineyards of Penedès includes 47 municipalities in the province of Barcelona and 16 in the province of Tarragona, with its headquarters located in Vilafranca del Penedès, and is remarkable for its great variety of microclimates, which makes this grape production to present countless distinctive features, depending on the environment.

The cultivated varieties include the more international Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but we can also find more specific grapes of the Iberian Peninsula, as Cariñena, Tempranillo and Garnacha Tinta, and some local (Monastrell, Samsó, Xarel·lo and Macabeu).

Among the most prominent cellars in the region, we can find firms as recognized as Agusti Torelló i Mata, Blancher, Caves Hill, Gramona, Jaume Serra, Juvé y Camps, Pinord, Raventós i Blanc, René Barbier, Sumarroca, in addition to many small producers which, however, are able to offer real jewels thanks to a know-how that comes from their experience of generations of grape growers and oenologists.

If we look at the results of the last Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, one of the most prestigious awards in the international world of wine, among its winners we find several references from the DO Penedès, like Cossetània Tinto Reserva 2009 (Bodega Castell d’Or), Gran Clot dels Oms Negre 2011 and Xarel·lo 2013 (Bodegues Ca N’Estella), Parató Passió 2006 (Parató) and Vino Pata Negra 2014 (Jaume Serra – J. García Carrión).

Qualified Single estate Cava, is it the solution to the lack of territorial unity of cava DO?

Probably one of the most notorious problems of the designation of origin cava is its lack of territorial unity, which means that in certain markets, there is confusion about the origin and quality of the Spanish sparkling wines. While exports of cava show an increasing trend, we must also bear in mind that the competition is fierce, especially in reference to Italian sparkling wines, very successful in key markets such as the Anglo-Saxon.

Given this situation, the Cava Regulatory Board has raised the creation, by the end of the year, of a new designation called ?Qualified Single estate Cava?, directed to highlight the quality credentials of the national cava. The new designation may include only cavas produced in single vineyards, with the additional requirement that producers will have to make their own base wines and will be subject to strict quality controls imposed by the Council.

Recently the President of the Council, Pere Bonet, stated that

?With this new classification we adopt the ‘château’ philosophy, which will give producers the opportunity to gain recognition for wines produced in a specific place in his vineyard. We have received great interest from producers about this initiative and, although it is too early to say how many wineries will participate, we anticipate it will be a significant amount?.

Although the final restrictions on access to the denomination ?Qualified Single estate Cava? are yet to be defined, everything anticipates that they will exceed those of Cava Gran Reserva, an action that intends to reach consumers around the world with the great variety of sparkling wine producers and promote a ?premium? image of cava in all potential markets.

In addition, as part of the strategy of producers guild, Bonet also noted that the reason for the drop in sales of cava in the UK in recent years is the cessation of distribution agreements with several supermarkets, which were detrimental to the intended image of quality given its low prices. The goal now is to get into high-end restaurants and specialist retailers in the British Isles to change public’s perception.

Celebrities who make wine

More and more celebrities and stars produce their own wines; fame increases the success of their releases, a phenomenon that we already witnessed in perfume and clothing. But the new trend for those stars seems to be the production of wine.

The couple formed by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie continues to be in the center of all the attention. Pitt took advantage of this situation by launching its inaugural vintage, and Angelina its Miraval Rosé 2012, which were sold in 5 hours.

This sales record had an impact on the wine community and generated reflections. It also showed the desperation of the fans for purchasing a wine bottle launched by Jolie and Pitt. This event generated many press releases and further interest in wine. In order not to take too much advantage of their names, the bottles were not marketed at exorbitant prices, with a 15 ? per bottle.

However, not every famous stars offer fair prices or accessible wine bottles onto the wine market. Yao Ming (former basketball player in the NBA) charged 390 Euros for every bottle of its first harvest. Other stars linked their names to wine like Fergie (Black Eyed Peas vocalist), Drew Barrymore, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi. But some of them engage themselves further in the process of production, vineyards and crops such as Francis Ford Coppola, who owns part of Inglenook Estate and has managed to create a great and highly respected brand in the wine marketplace.

The quality of the celebrities wines varies at least as much as their prices, and in my personal opinion they should be selected in the same way you would select a regular wine, unless you’re a self-confessed fan of any specific personality, and wish to purchase a bottle for your collection.

Lanzarote wines

 TAGS:The Canary Islands are popular for its beaches, great weather and nature reserves. But wine is also important with various denominations of origin which are increasingly present in restaurants and diner tables.

In this case, the OD of Lanzarote is one of the most popular of the island. This ideal place can count with a unique and special weather with high temperatures (averages about 20 º ) with many hours of sunlight. One of the curiosities of the island’s vineyards is that they sit on volcanic soils, with black volcanic ashes that prevent the growth of other vegetation, and also has excellent water retention properties. Those conditions are very unique, especially compared to other Spanish areas where wines are made.

However, the harvest is traditional, done without any machining. The grape varieties of this DO can be white or red. Among the first category we find the Volcanic Malvasia, Muscat of Alexandria, Gual and Verdelho. And, for the second, Black Listán or Almuñeco, Malvasia Rosada, Bastardo Negro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Black Muscat. As you see, a wide variety of grape wine lead to those strong wines.

Lanzarote wines can be white, red, rosé, and sparkling, each one with its particular characteristics. Whites have yellow and transparent colors, and fruits and flower aromas, and fresh in the mouth. Sitting on the beach of Lanzarote, it will be a pleasure to have a rosé wine of this DO. Fruit aromas will be much more intense, being balanced and soft in the mouth.

The red wines are bright, with colors ranging from ruby to cherry. With a ripe fruit flavor, they have a strong persistence in the mouth. Sparkling wines, meanwhile, have fruit flavors, fresh aromas and are usually delicate in the mouth, so that it marries well with first dishes and desserts.

Marsala wine

 TAGS:Marsala wine is produced in Sicily, Italy, in a region that has the same name and received a protected designation of origin in 1969. Marsala wine is similar to port; it was initially fortified to withstand sea travels and then gained in popularity.

Marsala wine is produced under the process ?In Perpetuum?, very similar to the one used to make sherry. This process is to raise the level of alcohol while preserving the characteristics during long sea voyages. It is made from white grapes Grillo, Inzolia and Catarratto types, among others.

The Marsala wine was served as an appetizer between the first and second dish, and most recently served as a dessert with Roquefort cheese, Parmesan and other spicy cheeses, fruits or pastries.

Marsala Wine is classified according to its sweetness, color, and aging; levels of sweetness are dry (with maximum 40 grams of sugar per liter) semi (41-100 grams per liter) and sweet (with more than 100 grams per liter)

With regard to aging, it may be Gold, Ambra, Rubino, Fine (aged one year), Superiore (Aged two years), Superiore Riserva (Aged at least 4 years), Vergine or Pavers (Aged at least 5 years), Vergine or screeds or screeds Stravecchio e Vergine Riserva (aged at least 7 years). Marsala wine is also quite used for cooking and making sauces.

The appearance of Marsala wine can vary from golden brown to ruby, to amber, and is popular in Americans Italian restaurants for his versatility and because it allows you to create all kinds of recipes. How portuguese vinho verde is made

The vinho verde is produced in a wide area ranging from Cambra Valley to the Rio Minho, which forms the border with Galicia – Spain. Its name Vinho verde (green wine) comes from the youth of the grapes used and is an appellation of origin since 1984.

It has digestive properties due to its freshness; it is consumed during the summer and can be red (full-bodied, intense color and slightly sparkling) or white (greenish or straw). The history of Vinho Verde was initiated by the religious  who made contributions to the Portuguese crown.

The vinho verde is made in the traditional manner without the technological artifacts; young musts rich in sugar and acidity are collected, then treated with nitrogen for a more effective fermentation (sudden temperature increases must be avoided).

For the preparation this wine must pass by a malolactic fermentation, which involves the conversion of malic acid (present in grapes and other fruits) to lactic acid by the bacteria and using vitamin B, purines, pyridines and some amino, reducing the acidity and enhance its quality.

Sometimes malolactic bacteria are artificially added to this wine to cause fermentation. In the special case of the Portugal green wine, we try to prevent that the fermentation takes place in the bottle.

One of the grapes that is more used for the production of Vinho verde is the Albariño grape. It is used for white wine production in the region of vinho verde. Additionally are harvested white caste of Arinto, march back, Azal, Batoca, Laurel, and Trajadura, among others. And red caste of Amaral (Azal red), Borracal, Espadeiro, Baker, Horsetail Anho and Pedral, among others.

What is a sweet red wine ?

The natural sweet wine is a wine with high sugar content, and comes from the same process as fortified wine. It may be red, rosé or white. Some people find it easier to drink sweet red wines than traditional wines, stronger and more complex.

Some well-known sweet reds that you can find on the market are fruit wines made from blueberries and strawberries. You can also find sparkling Lambrusco wines from northern Italy, Port wine, of Portuguese origin, and the sweet reds with Monastrell, from Jumilla, Alicante and Malaga, for example.

The vintage drafting process is delayed, so that the grapes are even more mature than usual. When the grape juice is fermented and sugar has turned into alcohol, alcohol is added (5-10%), in order to stop the process of the yeast, preventing a part of the natural sugars from becoming alcohol.

The quality sweet wines are quality liqueur and as such they are regulated by the rules of designations of origin too. To be considered as such a sweet red wine must have more than 250 grams of natural sugars per liter, and its alcohol content is usually from 12% by volume. The sum of rectified alcohol from other distilled wine products will reach between 15% and 22%.

Garnacha wines are one of the sweetest, with low tannins and quite fruity, but with a light body, and that?s why we like it so much. Do we recommend any? Of course! Here you go:
