How to chose a whisky for a gift

If you don’t know what to give this holiday season, choosing a drink is one of the best options. If the gifted is a whisky lover, then you have it easy, since he will for sure looking forward to receive this gift.

Now, to choose a good whisky we must keep in mind a number of parameters, among which are the origin, the history, the brand, the type… you have to look if it is very refined and if it fits with the character of the person to whom we’re giving away. In order to get quality and not fall into the mistake of buying a minor bottle, it is noteworthy that whiskey must have wood or fruity aroma, not just alcohol.

To do this we should ask the seller and correctly read the labels. We recommend going to a shop that specializes in spirits, since they will better know and advise us on the whisky we really need to buy.

When we are guided by the parameters of age, we have to consider that single malt whisky establishes age by the years it has been in barrel, whereas if it’s not single, but blend, age indicates the youngest in the mixture.

If we want to buy a Scotch whisky, we will probably hit the target, but the price is slightly higher, while if we want a whisky with more alcohol content we have to know that it can be over 43 degrees. If we believe that price will give us great confidence, it is not always so, because it is best to consider if it is a limited edition, if it is more aged or much purer than others.

The origin of this drink is also a good parameter, since it will tell us a lot about is provenance and the country in which it was produced. If you’re going to spend money, you better try it before.

Christmas dinners: spanish cava for the starters

 TAGS:Christmas is one of the times of year that I like most (perhaps for being born on New Year?s Eve). From the day I see the first Christmas lights and decoration until New Year?s day the best dinners and meals of the year take place, the best parties are held… To live the Christmas atmosphere the best is to get an interesting selection of cava as the one I propose in the following lines.

The first thing I would like to make clear is that we must begin to change that habit of drinking cava and sparkling wine just at the end of the menu, by the dessert time. The cava can be drunk throughout the dinner. It may accompany soups, fish dishes, seafood, snacks, pies … The possibilities are as many as we are willing to try. The result is always good.

I personally love to start with a glass of champagne or cava as an aperitif. It?s just perfect for Christmas. That is why I searched the cava brands I think you might like most.

By price, for large families, good drinkers of champagne or tighter budgets, I would recommend any of the Vallformosa ones. Juvé & Camps Cinta Púrpura Brut will also do very good. If you are looking for something more special, Juve y Camps Reserva de la Familia Brut Nature can be an alternative to consider.

Those who want something different can opt for a Naveran Odisea. Its price goes around twelve Euros per bottle, what makes it ideal for tasting and trying, if you don?t know it yet, and the bottle is far from what we are used to which refers cava. So it is with the Robert J. Mur Reserva Brut Nature, another name to consider.

The most pompous bottle, for tables where the decor is very important, is the Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad. A cava with a striking presence thanks to those silver accents on the bottle (floral motifs and the logo of the winery). Besides its nice combination of Macabeo and Parellada grapes make it sublime for this time of the year.

As my favorite cava wines are the rosé ones, I will propose two: Freixenet Elyssia Rosadowhich interested me about because of its image but convinced me by his taste and María Casanovas Pinot Noir Brut Rosat: elegant, aromatic and dry, the perfect combination.

Finally, for those who want to make a good gift: Gramona Impérial Gran Reserva Brut 2006 and Recaredo Turó d’en Mota 2000. Enjoy your appetizer!

Christmas Punch

The origin of Christmas punch goes back to ancient Persian villagers who consumed a very similar beverage to the “Panch” consisting of rum, water, sugar and herbs, then this custom passed to Europe where the drinks name was changed to “Punch”.

Christmas punch may vary based where in the world it is prepared: for example, Mexican Christmas punch is a drink made on the basis of tecojotes, apples, guava, raisins, cinnamon, water and tamarind.

Its preparation is simple and involves placing all ingredients in a pot and let boil, then simmer a few minutes and stop to let it rest.

In these pre-Christmas days, while you wait for your Christmas Gifts, we show how to make different types of traditional Christmas Punch:

The traditional Christmas milk punch is a drink that is served hot and is a delight at meetings and parties:

Christmas Milk Punch

Ingredients:

Elaboration:

Whisk in a bowl the hot milk, egg yolks and honey, sprinkle the edges of the glasses with grenadine and sugar and serve. Decorate with mint leaves and sprinkle a little cinnamon to taste.

Another kind of Christmas punch that has earned a place among the habits in December and which it’s served cold, is the rum and cacao Punch.

Rum and cocoa punch

Ingredients

  • 10 eggs
  • 5 tablespoons of cocoa butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup rum
  • 3 cups of powdered milk
  • Cinnamon powder

Elaboration:

For the preparation of cocoa and rum punch, place all ingredients except cinnamon in a blender and mix, then save the glass in the refrigerator and serve the drink in a glass sprinkled with a little cinnamon to taste.

Finally, there is a typical Venezuelan cream punch very suitable for these dates, based upon condensed milk which in some regions is served cold in this season, as its name says it is very creamy:

Venezuelan cream Punch

Ingredients

  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 5 egg yolks
  • ¼ cup rum
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Elaboration

It consists of blending egg yolks for 5 minutes, then add the condensed milk, rum and vanilla and blend for another 5 minutes. For storage place it in glass bottles and saved in the refrigerator. You could drink it already, but it is better cold and if you keep it refrigerated and macerate for 3 days.
