The Canary Islands are popular for its beaches, great weather and nature reserves. But wine is also important with various denominations of origin which are increasingly present in restaurants and diner tables.
In this case, the OD of Lanzarote is one of the most popular of the island. This ideal place can count with a unique and special weather with high temperatures (averages about 20 º ) with many hours of sunlight. One of the curiosities of the island’s vineyards is that they sit on volcanic soils, with black volcanic ashes that prevent the growth of other vegetation, and also has excellent water retention properties. Those conditions are very unique, especially compared to other Spanish areas where wines are made.
However, the harvest is traditional, done without any machining. The grape varieties of this DO can be white or red. Among the first category we find the Volcanic Malvasia, Muscat of Alexandria, Gual and Verdelho. And, for the second, Black Listán or Almuñeco, Malvasia Rosada, Bastardo Negro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Black Muscat. As you see, a wide variety of grape wine lead to those strong wines.
Lanzarote wines can be white, red, rosé, and sparkling, each one with its particular characteristics. Whites have yellow and transparent colors, and fruits and flower aromas, and fresh in the mouth. Sitting on the beach of Lanzarote, it will be a pleasure to have a rosé wine of this DO. Fruit aromas will be much more intense, being balanced and soft in the mouth.
The red wines are bright, with colors ranging from ruby to cherry. With a ripe fruit flavor, they have a strong persistence in the mouth. Sparkling wines, meanwhile, have fruit flavors, fresh aromas and are usually delicate in the mouth, so that it marries well with first dishes and desserts.
