Wine And Fast Food – A Possible Combination?

Where is it written that eating pizza or hot dogs cannot be combined with a good wine? Wine does not always have to be accompanied by fancy cuisine as it can successfully be paired with an infinite variety of dishes.

Limitations are not our philosophy. Even the experts say it, like Nicolás Boise, chief sommelier of Mugaritz restaurant, who was quoted in the Spanish Newspaper El País recommending that junk food and wine can be a perfect combination.

But what wines pair well with fast food? It depends on the ingredients in each dish. If you are eating a sausage the choice of wine will depend on the type of sausage, the sauces and the other ingredients in that particular dish.

The basic hot dog (with mustard and ketchup and nothing else) goes well with white wines of the Gewürtzraminer type. If the hot dog also has crispy onions both rosés and sparkling wines will pair very well.

Nowadays it’s pizza and wine! Beer is not the only drink that goes well with pizza; if you prefer having a glass of wine instead we recommend rosé as the best option. Young red wines are also a good pairing. If the pizza has anchovies (something that is currently scarce), it is better to choose a white wine to counteract the flavour, and if you opt for a barbeque pizza you might find that going for a consistent and full-bodied red wine, like a Merlot, is an excellent choice.

Chocolate desserts marry perfectly with many kinds of wines. We already feel quite uncomfortable about the milkshakes found in many fast food establishments, and if we had wine with our dinner we would also like to finish with wine. In fact, you will find that there are some wine and chocolate combinations that maximise the flavours. For these types of desserts, we recommend red wines.

For certain spicy dishes, like kebab, the best combination is made with an intense and stronger wine. And red wines are also preferred when pairing with hamburgers. For some quick tapas, the white and sparkling wines are excellent choices, while taking into account the type of tapas and whether the dish has meat or fish.

If what we want is to seduce our partner, then we will opt for the sparkling wines. The bubbles will enhance a sensual and dynamic atmosphere, a perfect choice. They are also perfect for desserts, and as an after dinner drink. And not to forget, the sparkling ones are also the perfect choice as an appetizer before dinner.

Yes, in Italy there is life beyond pizza. And also much color: green basil, white, red . And is actually so that Italian cuisine is full of joy and flavors. What are some of the most common dishes? We will mention some of them.

Polenta – Polenta is a recipe from the north of Italy, made with cornmeal. The dish is a very versatile one, and to serve it mixed with mushrooms is very good. Do not hesitate to accompany polenta for wines made from Malbec or Syrah.

Soups – When winter never forget you of Italian soups. One of the favorites is chickpea soup with chestnuts, from the center of Italy and cooked with fresh chestnuts. Another option is the famous minestrone. Enjoy them with a young red wine made from Pinot Noir and Merlot.

Desserts – Do you have a sweet tooth? Do not miss the biscuits Meini, the Schiacciata all uva (focaccia with typical grapes of the region of Tuscany made during the month of September) Shwarzplententorte (buckwheat and Apple Cake made from wheat and apple, typical of northern Italy) and the Panna Cotta (means cream and of Piedmontese origin). Which is nicely combined with white wine, both sweet and dry.

Portugal as a land of wine: the wine regions of Lisboa and Ribatejo

The district of Lisbon has always been present in the history of wine culture of Portugal. Much of the production of white wines of Bucelas (Denomination of Origin region from 1911 until today) regularly travelled to English court.

In Colares (near Sintra), there are the country’s oldest vines. After several decades falling into oblivion, the Adega Cooperativa de Colares has developed and boosted its production. Here there are produced “crianzas” (4 years required), open coloured and approximately 12.5% alcohol content. The main grapes are Ramisco, in red wines, and the delicate Malvasia, in white wines. Anyone who has had the opportunity to taste the wines from this area certainly have noticed that they are a little jewel in terms of body and very special aroma.

Another wine region that shares territory with the Tagus river is Ribatejo, known for its generous wine production for the domestic market, thanks to large areas of flat terrain and temperate climate, which once supplied the Portuguese colonies in Africa.

From the 80s the Ribatejo vineyards have undergone major restructuring, coming from its cellars themselves, now with stainless steel tanks -before concrete-, oak barrels for aged wines, and even the production legislation of regional wines, which allows the use of strains not admitted by the DO, which consequently opens a wide range of possibilities to create new wines.
The traditional strains are many: Periquita and Castelão Nacional are the queens of the reds, while for the whites they usually use Fernão Pires and Arinto, among others. But the vineyard restructuring has allowed the introduction of international strains such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah, with excellent results. Their white wines are fruity and with floral aromas, and reds are aromatic with soft tannins.

Also in Lisbon there is a great wine production with the strain Periquita, in addition to Touriga Nacional and others. The Lourinhã region develops excellent aged spirits and just off, in Óbidos (Leiria district) they produce a very aromatic liqueur, garnet red, called Ginginha de Óbidos, and some varieties have aromas of cinnamon or vanilla. Carcavelos wines, the smallest Portuguese wine region, are syrupy, age very well and have a topaz colour and aroma of almonds.

Arruda dos Vinhos – Lisbon (also called “Ruta de vinos” or wine route) produce some of the best wines in the region, maintaining its quality for over 50 years. The reds are robust, garnet red and whites are light, straw or citrine coloured.

Since the choice is difficult… our recommendations for today are more than two : )

From Ribatejo we offer a white wine and a red wine. The first is the result of the union between the traditional Fernão Pires with Sauvignon Blanc; the second is born from Touriga Nacional and Syrah.

Saint-Julien, art in Bordeaux

 TAGS:Art in Bordeaux, this is what the wines of Saint-Julien are: interesting and different, unique pieces that proves us that no part of the preparation process has been taken lightly. Everything has a meaning, and, as with art, not always well understood. It is sometimes misinterpreted, but it often drives crazy with its greatness.

But let’s leave the abstract side of Saint-Julien to focus on practical data:  this region is located in the heart of the Medoc region, 900 hectares spread over 26 vineyards, which produce more than 6 million bottles a year.

Being situated between Margaux and Pauillac, comparisons with wines from these two terroirs are inevitable; although Saint-Julien always comes out unscathed … you don?t gather so many ?Grand Crus? per square kilometer for nothing…

The first notes of its fragrance give us information about its origins, Bordeaux. It has elegance and gradually overwhelms us. The wine is not exactly smooth, has character and is therefore perfect with hearty dishes like beef stew or roast, Spanish food specialties, like many of its ?tapas?.

I have not ever tried with fish, but I plan to investigate whether this combines with cod and halibut. Above all, I love to think how good can be a glass of Sant Julien accompanying a plate of Riojano Cod (peppers, garlic, onion, tomato, a speck of spice and of course, generous Olive oil). Occasionally you must treat yourself well.

In the region of Saint-Julien grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are common. We can also find Saint-Julien wine made from Malbec and Petit Verdot, it would not be our choice if we are looking for a classic, but which is nevertheless a good choice and proof that French wine is not as squared as it looks.

I recommend Château Lagrange 2005 or Chateau Saint Pierre 2000, which are also two of the best vintages in the region. A little cheaper, but also delicious, Connetable de talbot 2006 or Les fiefs de lagrange 2008.

Everything has a meaning and, like art, it is not always fully understood, in fact it is sometimes misunderstood, but some others it can make crazy to whoever taste it for the first time.

But let’s leave the abstract side of Saint Julien for a while to focus on more practical and worldlier data. We discover where in France it comes from upon the first notes of its fragrance arrival. It is a Bordeaux. It shows its gradual elegance while its warmth overwhelms us. However, it is not a very smooth wine, it has character and that is the reason why it is perfect with strong dishes like stewed or roasted meat, game and Spanish food specialties, like most of their tapas.

I have not ever tasted it with fish yet, although I have planned to investigate how good could it combine with cod and halibut. Above all, it makes my mouth water to think how perfect will be a glass of Saint Julien to accompany a plate of cod Rioja style (peppers, garlic, onions, tomatoes, a pinch of spicy and, of course, generous olive oil). You have to take great pleasure in pairing.

The most common grape varieties in Saint Julien French region are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although it is the latter the one that gives these wines that quality of its superb aging. That?s another reason to invest in at least one bottle for our own private cellar. Hell yeah!

We can also find Saint Julien wine made from Malbec and Petit Verdot grapes. It would not be our choice if we are looking for a classic, but nevertheless it is a good option which proves that French wine is not as rigid as it looks like sometimes.

I recommend Chateau Lagrange 2005 or Chateau Saint Pierre 2000, which are also two of the best vintages of the region. A bit cheaper, but also delicious, we find Connétable de Talbot 2006 or Les Fiefs of Lagrange 2008.

Any other? Of course, you can have whatever you want in Pauillac:

Uva perruna (doggy Grape), Pardillo, Negrera (slavers), Botón de gallo (rooster?s button ?yes, it’s what you have just read, it is the translation of those names. Local names for famous grapes… Do you want to know which ones are they?

Wine is universal, made worldwide, and elaborated most of the time with the local grapes, harvested in the place of manufacture.

These grapes despite having a distant origin have some “nicknames” in each and every different place. Let?s know some synonyms for grape names.

  • Merlot – This grape of French origin whose name derives from the diminutive of blackbird (this bird’s plumage has the color of the strain) is also known in France as Semillon rouge, and Merleau Bigney.
