Alcohol Abuse in Adolescents Can Affect the Brain

 TAGS:undefined

A recent study by the University of Eastern Finland and the University Hospital of Kuopio has seen a “critical thinking” in young people who were heavy drinkers of alcohol during their teenage years.

The results of the research, published in the journal Addiction, reveal that parts of the brain that develop before the age of 20 may be disrupted as a result of abuse of alcoholic beverages.

The study was performed using magnetic resonance imaging techniques applied to the brain structure of healthy youngsters that were alcohol users during their adolescence. They also tested control subjects of the same age that were light drinkers. Through three transverse phases performed at the same time. Over 10 years, with ages between 13 and 18 years at the beginning of the investigation.

All participants had good academic results and did not show appreciable differences in mental health problems, while drinkers had not been diagnosed with any alcohol abuse disorder. However, significant statistical differences between the two groups were observed.

Among “drinkers” there is a decrease in the volume of gray matter in the anterior cingulate cortex (an area of the brain involved in functions such as regulation of blood pressure and heart rate, and certain functions of higher level, such as reward anticipation, decision making, impulse control and emotion), as well as in the right insula (also linked to the latter functions of higher level).

According to the researchers, the excessive consumption of alcohol can interrupt the maturation process of the areas mentioned, particularly important in the control of impulses and in the sensitivity to the negative subjective effects of alcohol, so that these changes of volume can play an important role in the development of a substance use disorder later in life.

The exact mechanism behind these structural changes is not known, but it appears that some of them may be reversible if alcohol consumption is significantly reduced. And, as always, from Uvinum we recommend – a moderate and responsible consumption of alcohol. Relax and enjoy the pleasure of a glass of good wine without overdoing it.

Drink with your friends – It’s healthy now

Drinking is a social act that has become more and more popular to do in good company. Certain studies show that social drinkers have more friends and receive more emotional support in various life situations.

The social consumption of alcohol can have a great effect on the well-being of people. It is linked to social activities, such as laughter, singing and dancing. With this, we strengthen our social ties.

Over the years, the link between alcohol and the release of endorphins has also been demonstrated, which is especially relevant. But only when consumed in moderation. In fact, the activation of endorphins not only makes us more relaxed but also seems to tune the immune system.

The fact that drinking continues to be a social fact is significant, and this is because it brings two potential social benefits: One is that moderate alcohol consumption increases psychological well-being and, directly or indirectly, promotes the construction of close personal ties and supports social bonds.

Recent research has shown that low or moderate levels of alcohol consumption may have beneficial effects on cognition and that this may include social cognition. That is to say, if you cultivate a healthy attitude towards alcohol consumption, not only do you avoid abuse but also give a positive example to friends and family.

Tips for moderate drinking

  • Combine the drink with food and tapas, especially when you go out with friends.
  • Mix it up with non-alcoholic beverages like water between each consumption.
  • Drink quality wine, experiment with new flavours to enter the world of pairing.
  • Take vitamin supplements with folic acid, especially if you’re a woman, because alcohol consumption lowers your levels.
  • Do not drink alone.
  • Do not drink if you are planning to drive or you are in situations of risk or at work.

Why is drinking alcohol in moderation good for the heart?

 TAGS:undefined

The phrase “alcohol is good for your health” is often heard, but that does not imply that, by listening to it very often, it is completely true. In fact, the scientific community has debated this topic since immemorial time and, and although they have had some achievements with their studies, there is still the controversy about these results and the difference that separates the community into two blocks. Undoubtedly, the benefit that is most heard is that it ensures good health and function of the heart by ingesting alcoholic beverages in moderation, but the big question is: how much is moderate?

According to experts, the ideal is to have 2 drinks / cups a day if you are under 65 and reduce that amount in half (1) if you pass that age. A drink or a glass a day is equivalent to 350ml of beer, 148ml of wine or 44ml of any other distilled beverage.

Among the many benefits of wine we can find are reduction in risk of cardiovascular diseases, strokes, diabetes, stones (stones) in the gallbladder and different heart symptoms.

The heart especifically benefits from the antioxidants we can find in wines and, in general, helps our entire cardiovascular system. Statistics show that active people who consume moderately wines are 50% less likely to develop heart disease than a person who spends all day in front of the television.

In conclusion, drinking alcohol moderately will bring us health benefits in the long run as long as we do not fall into the excess. Although, as everyone says, it is true that alcohol in large amounts can harm health, leading to pancreatitis, cirrhosis, hypertension, different types of cancers, depression and alcoholism. Remember: alcohol is good if taken in moderation, but it does not mean that, if you do not drink, you need to start. You do not need alcohol to lead a healthy life.

Inhaling spirit: a dangerous trend

 TAGS:undefined

Although it is a completely legal activity once you have become of age, smoking alcohol can give severe health damages. One can find on the internet a variety of videos and articles where they show you how to vaporize and inhale alcohol without having to purchase a specific device for the purpose. Where the objective is to vaporize the substance, inhale and feel the effects instantly.

“It’s worse than drinking it in its liquid form”, says Dr. Alfred Aleguas, at the toxicology department of the general hospital in Tampa, Florida, USA. “When inhaled, the steam goes directly to the lungs, bypassing the stomach, liver, and other organs for metabolism and absorption”. In addition, the doctor says that when inhaled, “you have no idea how much amount of alcohol is consumed because of the typical symptoms that advices you have had enough don’t occur when smoking”. The ethyl gasses can provoke severe respiratory infections and cause malfunction of your lungs.

Another myth about this dangerous activity is that, as consumers, when you inhale alcohol, one can feel the effects of it, but without gaining those extra calories. Dr. Aleguas flatly denies this fact. Because if you consume it, whether you inhale or drink alcohol, like it or not, you’re also getting the calories.

A survey in a bar asking guests revealed that even though people had heard about inhaling alcohol, or seen a video on the internet about the subject, they would not be willing to try it. Because of the mere fact that it looks, and is, dangerous and unhealthy. Also, the truth is that the alcohol can be very pleasurable without resorting to unorthodox or harmful techniques to consume it.

You can enjoy your drinks the classic way, as long as it is with responsibility. Because alcoholic beverages such as wine have multiple health benefits as long as it is enjoyed in moderation.

The value of education on responsible use of alcohol

Alcohol consumption among the younger population grows with each passing year. The figures speak for themselves when it states that, according to the Public Health Agency of Catalonia, more than half of 17-year-olds acknowledge that they have been drunk at least once during the last month. Therefore, we need to raise social awareness and promote education from the family and teachers to reduce alcohol consumption among the younger population.

  • Encourage good habits. Better health and good food habits can slow excessive consumption of alcohol. Also, young people drink mainly for fun, so we have to look for alternative entertainment to escape this problem.
  • Increase exercise. One of leisure activities that promote a more active life is the practice of sport. Not only during the week but also on weekends, doing group activities, adventure activities. And also extreme sports which can replace the adrenaline rush some feel from alcohol.
  • Family education. In recent years, studies demonstrate that one starts to drink at a younger age, and are more likely to have problems with alcohol if you are raised in a family that has a looser level of permissiveness. Perhaps it is good to talk to parents and children, encourage moderation in alcohol consumption at home, knowing effects, what to drink and what not.
  • Better educational campaigns in school. When it comes to education on alcohol in schools, it seems that their campaigns against alcohol are not working well enough. New values, new models of society, and therefore new realizations are needed to solve this problem.

In short, to prohibit consumption does not work, one need to offer leisure alternatives equally interesting for the young ones. This is would be the best way to educate and promote moderation in drinking, thus promote a taste for calm and pleasant consumption, and also get the advantage of the health benefits of drinks such as wine.

A glass of wine a day and health

VinoDrinking red wine every day during meals is considered normal in a lot of countries but in certain cultures this habit could seem slightly odd. In most of Europe and America it would not surprise anybody, infact, drinking a glass of wine every day is the most normal thing in the world. However the point we are going to focus on is not cultural nor social, least of all is it about wine qualities and the pleasure that it implies.

Research studies from around the world concluded that a daily and moderate consumption of red wine extends life expectancy by about 36% more than in people who are not used to drinking it; it means that people drinking small daily doses of wine (one glass) live approximately 3.8 years longer than the ones who don?t drink it.

Additionally the people drinking a daily glass of red wine have 34% lower risk of heart diseases, a health problem which increases death rate in people with advanced age.

More benefits of red wine

Besides letting us ?live longer?, wine has other properties that could be compared to medicine. As everybody knows, red wine significantly helps the circulatory system. But than?s nota ll wine is for: Doctor Janet L. Stanford said that men drinking 4 or 5 glasses of red wine per week have 50% lower risk of prostate cancer, and stated that wine is a powerful antioxidant, a good anti-inflammatory agent and is also really helpful in eliminating carcinogenic cells.

?According to these studies, white wine, beer and other spirits don?t have the same preventive value as red wine.?

Another miraculous power of wine is its ability to aid in losing weight, because the liver processes red wine calories in a particular way: it converts them in energy and not in fat.

It?d be hazardous to reccomend alcohol for medical purposes, but it?s clear that wine has a lot of good qualities if you drink it moderately because, whatever wine or alcohol is, its consumption must always come along with common sense and moderation.

This information came from the Department of Public Health of Wageningen?s University (Holland).
