4 Tips For A Healthy Life Drinking Wine

 TAGS:undefined

Every so often new studies documenting the health benefits from drinking wine are published, and almost just as often other studies showing links between diseases and frequent wine consumption appear.

Some of the benefits of enjoying a daily glass of wine include the reduction of cholesterol, stress and diabetes; on the other hand, you also risk the possibility of developing cancer and liver problems. With all this conflicting information it is ok to ask: Can you lead a healthy life when drinking wine? The answer is yes. In the wine itself certain elements are present that are known to be beneficial to health, and so it is advisable to drink a glass of wine a day.

4 tips for a healthy life drinking wine

Moderate consumption of wine does not have to be harmful to your health, indeed, it can even be beneficial if it is included as part of a lifestyle with healthy habits.

  1. Eat a healthy and balanced diet. The most important habit to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to consume a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables being the main food group and make sure your diet also contains sufficient fibre. There are numerous wines that are perfect for pairing with salads and stews. Meat and fish are also important parts of your diet but make sure to choose lean pieces and reduce the intake of animal fats.
  2. Lead an active life. Exercising on a regular basis also contributes to your overall health. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a strenuous sport, the most important thing for improving your health is to exercise regularly.
  3. Reduce stress in your life. Feeling relaxed and avoiding stress is just as important as eating well and exercising. A nice way to try to control the stress is to enjoy good times with friends from time to time, perhaps accompanied with a good bottle of wine.
  4. Drink wine responsibly. Wine can be part of a healthy lifestyle and can even be the perfect excuse to meet friends or to enjoy a meal in pleasant company. Just keep in mind to be aware of how much you drink – the recommendation is a daily glass of wine of 125 ml – and do not drink on an empty stomach.

So, yes, it is possible to lead a healthy life when drinking wine. And, by the way, although it is usually red wine that is mentioned when talking about the benefits of wine, it is worth mentioning that white wine possesses exactly the same positive health effects as red wine.

New Studies Reveal That Red Wine Has Additional Benefits To The Heart

 TAGS:undefined

There are already several proven studies that show that red wine is good for the heart. And now more evidence of its benefits has been discovered. The study comes from the Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences of LSU in the United States, where they have developed a new stent that releases red wine antioxidants slowly over time, promoting healing and preventing blood clotting and inflammation.

The people responsible for this development explain that by delivering red wine antioxidants during conventional angioplasty, it may be possible to prevent the build-up of excess tissue and the blood vessel from narrowing again as it heals.

In addition to the stent, they are also in the process of developing a balloon coated with the same compounds to treat blood flow blockages throughout the body called peripheral artery disease. Drug-coated balloons are a relatively new product and are being developed to help interventional cardiologists treat arteries that are difficult to treat with traditional angioplasty and stent treatments.

As mentioned there are more studies that highlight the benefits that red wine possesses to protect the heart. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that resveratrol was unrelated to rates of heart disease, cancer and death. It was also shown in controlled studies that people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol, regardless of the type of drink, tend to have better blood records.

As for a recent study published by the National Institute of Wine Research in Australia, it was shown that drinking wine in moderation reduces the risk of heart disease. People who regularly drink a small amount of red wine, especially if accompanied with food, have a 30% lower risk of heart disease.

Red wine could help prevent erectile dysfunction

 TAGS:undefined

According to a recent research conducted by the UK and USA, the wine and grapes in general are “super sexual” foods that are able to help to prevent erectile dysfunction. This is another good thing to add to the list of advantages that wine provides to our health such as the cardiovascular system protection and memory improvement.

The research, conducted by Harvard University and East Anglia University teams, has been published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and revealed that middle-aged men who drank and ate foods such as red wine, berries and citrus fruits were 10% less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction due to the presence of flavonoids.

These substances are natural pigments that help protect the body from damage caused by oxidizing agents such as ultraviolet rays or environmental pollution and thus also help prevent some diseases. In this sense, beverages such as wine and tea contain high levels of flavonoids, which are also present in fruits and vegetables.

To conduct the study, more than 50,000 test results were taken, on which men were asked their ability to have and maintain an erection. They were tested every four years, gathering all kinds of information such as their daily diet, weight, physical activity, caffeine intake and other habits like tobacco.

One third of the population reported suffering erectile dysfunction during the study, but those with a diet rich in anthocyanins and flavonoids were less likely to suffer from it. On the other hand, men who maintained an active physical activity like walking up to 5 hours per week, combined with a diet rich in flavonoids, had a lower rate of erectile dysfunction.

Professor from East Anglia University Aedin Cassidy explained: “We examined six major types of flavonoids commonly consumed and found that 3 in particular -anthocyanins, flavanones and flavans- are beneficial.” He concluded: “men who regularly consume foods rich in these flavonoids are 10% less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction”.

Wine is beneficial to women’s hearts

TAGS:undefinedRecently, researchers from the Indiana University and the School of Public Health at Harvard analyzed data from studies of 88,940 American women between 1991 and 2011. The study led them to discover six habits that can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

The analysis’ were performed on women between 27 and 44 years of age who filled out questionnaires about their health habits and lifestyles. The analysis found that women who followed certain six healthy habits were less likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases.

Moderate wine consumption, at a rate of one drink per day, was one of the 6 habits. The other 5 were not smoking, maintain a low body mass index, endure at least 2.5 hours of physical activity a week, watch less than 7 hours of television a week and eat in a healthy and balanced way.

What researchers believe is that 73% of the cases of coronary heart disease recorded while the study was conducted could have been avoided if all participants had followed these lifestyle habits.

“Adherence to a healthy lifestyle is also associated with a significant reduction in the risk of developing heart disease among women who had already developed a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, such as diabetes, or hypertension, or hypercholesterolemia.” – says Dr. Andrea K. Chomistek, lead author and assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Indiana in Bloomington.

On the other side, the researchers at Harvard Medical School have released findings on the relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and the decreased risk of developing heart failure.

“What we have found was that those who drank moderately up to seven drinks a week had a lower risk of heart failure“, Solomon said. For men, the protective effect seemed to come at about two drinks per day, and for women one drink per day.

More wine and… better sex life

TAGS:undefinedLet’s begin the new year with some good news: Drinking wine has, apart from several other benefits for health, a possible positive effect on women’s sex life.

This is the result of a study by Ricardo Bartoletti and Nicola Mondaini, two doctors from the University of Florence. Following their investigation there is a causal relationship between the moderate and regular consumption of wine and a better sexual health of women.

The study shows that drinking wine with moderation, about 1 to 2 glasses daily, makes women relax and loose inhibitions.

The study was carried out between approximately 1.000 Italian women between 18 and 50 years of age. In the group, there were as many non-drinking women as women drinking wine moderately on a regular basis.

The objective of the research was to measure the rate of female sexual function (a measure used in other scientific studies to investigate femal sexuality including issues such as sex life, desire, interest in sex, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction in relationships or pain while having sex). As a result, the doctors found out that the group of women drinking 1 or 2 glasses a day, had a better index of sexual desire compared to the non-drinking women of the group.

From these results the doctors concluded that “there is a potential relation between the consumption of wine and a better sexuality“. Their hypothesis states that the chemical components of wine might stimulate the circulation towards the erogenous zones of the body and in this way increase the sexual stimulation.

Mondaini pointed out that red wine “makes women feel more relaxed and their body react better to sexual incentives” and he suggests that the Mediterranean diet, that includes a little wine, can help to improve health and sex life.

Wine, an ally to prevent skin cancer

 TAGS:undefined

Wine has many benefits for the body, both exterior and interior. Several studies have established the advantages of wine on the skin, giving it greater elasticity and youth. And now it could also prevent skin cancer, as it happens with other types of cancer.

To this statement, four scientific studies that have been developed in various countries, show some of the effects of wine in preventing skin cancer. Specifically, they state that the effects of wine polyphenols act against the various cell types of skin cancer.

For example, one study states that resveratrol inhibits the growth of a type of squamous cancer, which like the rest, is caused by the ultraviolet rays from the sun, while another study establishes that resveratrol can induce opoptosis of cells from cardinoma epidermoid type A431.

One of these studies that demonstrate the relationship between wine and prevention of skin cancer was performed in Spain, specifically in Madrid. In this case, the research concluded that three red wine polyphenols inhibit the growth of melanoma cells. There are different types of skin cancers, being the melanoma the most dangerous of all them, being malignant. Skin cancer goes unnoticed by many people and, in fact, is one of the most spread among Spanish population.

Finally, another study tested in this area established that polyphenolic combination has a strong therapeutic potential in the treatment of melanoma on humans, which reproduces and grows with sun exposure, mostly.

In these studies it was found that the application of various types of polyphenols that compose wine on the dorsal area of mice affected by skin cancer could stop the degree of development of this type of cancer.

Stressed out? Drink a glass of good wine!

While it is known for its delicious taste and for being the preferred drink to accompany meals at meetings, wine also offers a number of health benefits to which are now added the results of a study performed by the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, indicating that drinking wine reduces stress.

According to the cardiologist Raul Pastor, head of the department of Internal Medicine, Clinical Hospital of Buenos Aires, one glass of wine daily in the case of women and two glasses of wine a day for men, significantly reduce the oxidative stress, which damages the genetic material of cells and is responsible for ageing, as well as for tumour formation and generation of chronic diseases.

Resveratrol, a component present in red wine, is one of the new alternatives to combat cardiovascular disease and to maintain a youthful skin thanks to its antioxidant properties.

Additionally, the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, has discovered that resveratrol also stimulates an anti-stress gene, which in turn activates other genes that protect the body from infection and even from ultraviolet radiation.

Paul Schimmel, one of the scientists in charge of the investigation indicated that ?this stress response represents a stage of biology that we had overlooked, and it appears that resveratrol activates it at concentrations much lower than those used in previous studies?.

Other benefits of resveratrol are:

  • Cardiovascular disease: it helps reducing inflammation, prevents oxidation of cholesterol by preventing platelets from sticking together and forming clots that cause heart attacks.
  • Diabetes: helps preventing insulin resistance.
  • Cancer: reduces the spread of cancer cells.
  • Alzheimer: it is able to protect nerve cells from the accumulation of plaques, responsible for Alzheimer.

Previously they had already released the benefits of resveratrol, but in this particular study was discovered the way how it works on the body: according to the results, resveratrol adheres to the PARP-1 protein and this generates an anti-stress and DNA repair response factor.

As for the stress, it is a feeling that produce excessive feelings of frustration and anxiety, but at low levels can help you perform your daily activities.

Stress is generated by several reasons, depending on the lifestyle of each person, from work, economic status or relationships, and can be identified by symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, dizziness, tremors and sweating.

Doing sports, resting, eating a balanced diet and drinking wine in moderation can help reduce stress and improve your quality of life. So get going and leave the stress aside!
