Summer cocktail ideas

TAGS:In a post dedicated to the 3 most refreshing summer cocktails, we could not forget the kings of the summer night:  mojito, margarita (add a bit of tamarind and you will notice the improvement), daiquiri and caipirinha. But, as we already know them very well (and when I say well I mean plenty, I mean, because everyone here we have tasted them time after time and again in their different variations and flavours, we have even come to prepare them at home and we have also dared to dance after X amount ingested), I thought that it could be a good idea to expand our ethylic culture so I will propose three different ones.

  • The first one requires some preparation but is certainly terrific: you will need a bottle of rum, white or dark, half kilo of black currants, and in the case of white rum, 500g of cane sugar and if you chose the dark rum then 200ml of acacia honey. Mix it all and let it stand (… for 6 months at least, so if you want to taste it rather you come to my house or you will have to postpone it until the next summer). When it is ready this rum is perfect for mixing with tonic or soda and lemon juice. Add lots of ice to it and let me know (I recommend you taste it alone because you will also love it this way).
  • Another perfect cocktail to fight the high temperatures has among its ingredients one of my favorite fruits, watermelon. The basis of this cocktail is vodka and the fun comes from the colorful part: watermelon, sugar and lemon juice. Although, I think it can also be very delicious with gin, to escape the typical gin & tonic, which is also very cool (and tastes great) but perhaps it is a little more old style.
  • And finally, a recipe for summer cocktail that can take hundreds of variations, perfect for improvising, in other words. Known as champagne punch, it is made with champagne or cava, but here comes the fun, as you can also add cointreau, white wine, brandy, bourbon, rum … and sugar, lemon, lime, pineapple, cinnamon, strawberry, peach, grenadine, pineapple and even pear.

Like all good summer cocktails, in addition to help us refreshing they must make us enjoy the evening and get inspired. So although we are in our home’s living room, we imagine that we are on a beach in Acapulco, for instance. As you can imagine, the presentation is very important. Use every resource that allows you to decorate them bring your imagination in and find all those glasses that you chose one time in a vintage shop to enjoy these cocktail gems that I have shared with you.

Best syrups for the best cocktails

TAGS:For me it is impossible to talk about the best cocktails and not to mention the syrup, but not anyone in general but Monin syrups in particular, because they work the essence of flavor like no other and, moreover, this year they celebrate one hundred years enriching and improving all cocktails that have them in their recipes.

After my best friend came back from his revealing trip to Brazil Kahlúa was always present in our celebrations. Kahlúa and rum, to prepare the delicious Kalhúa Mambo, with tequila, for Kahlua Rita or vodka, for that provocative Kahlua Black Russian. However, when we were already fully immersed in the exciting world of amateur mixology, we decided to change drink as the kahlua did not respond too well to mix with syrups.

Our next bet was rum. With it we rode along the whole ethyl ? rainbow drinking from a tasty Pretty Guava (rum, orange juice and grenadine syrup) to a Watermelon Martini (rum, strawberry juice and cranberry syrup and watermelon), not forgetting of course the blue Cuban Passion (dark rum, pineapple and banana juice, passion fruit syrup and blue curacao syrup).

At this point it was impossible not to keep on experimenting on it. So we had no choice but to buy gin, whiskey and select buy a large assortment of syrups that would inspire us to improve our technique. For those who want to do this experiment at home, I only have a couple of warnings: better in company than solos and please do not try it all on the same day, even pleasure must be dosed.

If someone wants to start their wanderings with Monin syrups and whisky for a personal cocktail, I would recommend a couple of the existing ones: God Sister or Creamy Blend. The first one is prepared in a simple way. You just have to take your favorite Scotch (you can also use Canadian whiskey) and Monin Amaretto syrup. For the second you would do the same, substituting amaretto syrup for a chocolate one and adding a generous bit of vanilla ice cream.

And for Gin lovers I would recommend the Grape Gin Martini (there can be nothing more chic than this drink), which combines gin, grape juice and cinnamon syrup. Delicious!

Finally, I will have to admit that there is no human way of drawing a conclusion to this experiment, among other reasons, because Monin keeps proposing new syrups and I want to try them all! My next purchase will be two of them: Almond syrup and Roses syrup, do you want to join me?

When the heat comes, is the wine over?

TAGS:I disagree with the statement “when the heat comes, buy wine is over.” It is true that beer is a tough opponent for the grape juice in the coming months, especially when taking a walk we found that almost all the terraces we see in our way look like scenes of a beer commercial.

But we do not have to be alarmed because there are solutions to continue enjoying our favorite wines in and summer, of course! When temperatures rise, drinking a thick, dense, dark, powerful red wine may be our last wish… we feel like for something cooler. No problem, we can order a white wine, for instance a Riesling, a Sauvignon Blanc, an Albariño … mmmmhhhhhh! It has to be served chilled in a glass ad hoc and it will leave us with a colorful sensation: freshness, fruit and flowers notes, aroma … beers cannot be compared with this.

We can also take advantage of the high temperatures arrival to vary a bit and try some rosé wines, which seems to be forgotten by us during the year. Protos Rosado 2011, Marqués de Riscal or Enate, three Spanish figures that can compete with other rosés such as an Italian Lambrusco de Emilia, an Australian as the Massena Rosé 2007 or a French one like Tavel Les Eglantiers 2009.

We cannot miss the sparkling wines in this classification. These wines are usually perfect for long warm afternoons, for those who do not want to end the after – lunch and for snacks with a touch of chic.

People who like to experiment and are not afraid of the mixtures can opt for cocktails including wine in his compositions. The spanish Sangría is perhaps the most famous and exported one, but the Rebujito (dry sherry with some sort of soda like 7Up or Sprite), the Agua de Valencia (Cava, gin, vodka, orange juice and sugar) or the Tinto de Verano (red wine and soda) can compare favorably with it in this mediterranean country. A little less glamorous are Calimotxo (wine and coke) and Zurracapote (red or rosé wine with lemons, oranges, sugar, cinnamon and some berry liquor), which every youngster has ever tried.

In any case, we can always find a good time to enjoy our favorite red wine at a barbecue, a nice dinner or just because during the afternoon or after dinner. In addition, we can always choose young red wines that can be served a bit extra chilled and seem to fancy a little more. This is the perfect opportunity to discover new promising wines and start finding those wines which will be our next favorite for next winter or the coming years.

Anyway, if you don’t like wine in summer, we can suggest you a few options:
