It originated in religious terms, but today is considered a civil and folk holiday. In North America some of its origins are held by European traditions, when they celebrated the good harvest that was gathered from the fields, and there are its beginnings to celebrate the end of harvest.

The roast turkey usually eaten this day, usually at a dinner party, is filled with various ingredients, such as corn or sage. Accompanying the turkey there are vegetables such as potatoes, mashed potatoes or carrots, which are common dishes in the cuisines of these countries. Sweet also accompany the feast and the table that day, such as the popular pumpkin, pecan, apple pies or the chocolate cookies.
