The best pairings for smoked salmon

gourmet, food pairing, wine, vodka, whisky, white wine TAGS:undefined

When we think of food pairing possibilities for salmon our first option’s usually white wine or champagne. However, there are many other possible pairings for this tasty and soft fish. Whether wine, beer or spirits, there is a wide range of drinks: it is just a matter of putting aside traditions and try something new and different.

Wines

  • Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and other Sauvignon from the Loire: these wines are known for their dry minerals, with delicate flavours of gooseberry that are perfect for smoked salmon. Other Sauvignons can also work as long as they are not too “herbal”.
  • Chablis: young Chablis’ work better since they have a clean freshness and just the right amount of acidity to counteract the salmon’s greasiness. Chardonnays also go well with hot smoked salmon.
  • Riesling: young German Riesling wines like Kabinett with their intense flavours of green apple combine especially well. Young Alsace wines and Australian Rieslings are also a good choice for this dish.
  • Gewürztraminer: Gewürztraminer and smoked salmon make an excellent couple. Just give this two a shot.
  • Dry sherry. If you like dry sherry, this might be your best choice. The sherry’s salty and spicy taste is perfect as long as it is served cold and directly after the bottle was opened.

Beers and spirits

  • Czech or German pilsner beer: the freshness and slight bitterness of pilsner is just the thing to serve with your dish of smoked salmon.
  • Weissbier, Witbier or wheat beer: the ‘white’ beers go with most types of seafood in addition to smoked fish. An excellent option that will go great with your meals.
  • Malt Whisky: it may not be the first thing on your mind thinking of smoked salmon but it makes for an excellent choice. Choose a light malt whisky if the taste of salmon is soft or an Islay whisky if it’s stronger.
  • Aquavit: this is an aromatic spirit from the Nordic countries and a very original option to enjoy with salmon. Its dill and cilantro aromas make it a perfect partner for the fish’s taste.
  • Vodka: good cold Polish vodka can work just fine. With this combination, you get to give an unexpected twist to your evening dining.

Moscow Mule, a powerful cocktail with vodka

 TAGS:undefined

Cocktails with vodka will give much to talk about from now on. In the meantime, we leave you with one of the most delicious cocktails, where vodka is the absolute protagonist.

It offers different tastes, slightly citric and stronger, and the contrast of the ginger beer. This cocktail has its origin in the liquor store Cock ‘n Bull in the U.S., in the 40s, in which two friends mixed typical flavors from this place and from a tavern where they drank beer. They chose the ginger flavor to find out its result when mixing it with vodka. And by chance, as with most cocktails, they found an exceptional taste later popularized worldwide.

Some other sources indicate that the cocktail was developed in the Mula restaurant in Hollywood, where they decided to put together all the less mixed and less demanded ingredients in any cocktail, resulting in this combination.

It is a refreshing cocktail, with a slightly exotic touch thanks to the lime. Anyway, it did not get the success often achieved with other cocktails with lime juice and vodka, such as the mojito or caipirinha. It is drunk at any time of day, but at night in the summertime tastes much better.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml vodka
  • 30 ml lime juice
  • 90 ml ginger beer

Preparation

It’s really easy to prepare, since all we need is to mix vodka, ginger beer and lime juice in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain all content in a tall glass with plenty of ice. Finally, we can decorate it with a slice of lime, and we can also frost the top of the glass with sugar to make it sweeter.

Sex on the Beach

 TAGS:undefined

In our series of the most relevant cocktails, today it is the turn of Sex on the Beach, which has already become a refreshing classic that evokes the summer. It was born in Miami in the 80s and gradually has spread to different countries. It’s one of the cocktails with more variations, though is based on vodka, but we can add different flavours of juices and other spirits.

Created as a result of the invention of a refreshing long drink, sweet and with lots of fruits, its name was originated on the fact of many young people visiting Miami actually seeking for sex on the beach in summer.

Ingredients

  • Ice
  • Vodka
  • Peach schnapps
  • Orange juice
  • Cranberry juice

Variations

While these ingredients are the official as mentioned, some variations change orange juice for pineapple juice, add coconut rum instead of vodka, or grenadine instead of cranberry juice.

There are several variations of this cocktail without alcohol, called ?safe sex on the beach?, rather than Sex on the Beach, as the traditional. And another with alcohol named ?oral sex on the beach?, with blue curacao; ?creamy sex on the beach?, which incorporates coconut rum and pineapple juice; and ?Greek sex on the beach?, with rum and tequila. There are variations for all tastes.

Elaboration

To create the cocktail Sex on the Beach, add vodka, orange or pineapple juice and peach schnapps in a shaker. Then crush some ice and put it in a tall, wide glass or cup. Serve the mixture obtained in the glass and garnish it with a slice of orange or pineapple. The cocktail must be very cold, as it is an ideal cocktail for hot summer nights.

Want a couple of good vodkas for a great Sex on the Beach? Then we recommend:

Gibson cocktail

 TAGS:

The Gibson cocktail is not a common one. The story of its creation is a bit contradictory because there are three different versions, all of them plausible. The cocktail Gibson has a curious flavor thanks to the onion that is introduced at the end of the preparation.

Some people consider the Gibson cocktail as a variation of Dry Martini. The preparations based on gin and Martini is the classic one, but some add vodka, usually Russian vodka, to preserve the tradition.

The first story of the Gibson cocktail says that its creator is the artist Charles Dana Gibson, born in 1867 in Massachusetts, creator of the Gibson Girls of the nineteenth century. According to the story, he asked his barman to change his Dry Martini and add onions in vinegar to it.

In the second story, the U.S. ambassador in Britain named Gibson, attended many receptions for his work and for not taking the typical dry Martini, he filled a glass with water and an onion instead of an olive, his invention was then called Gibson.

Finally, the third story of Gibson cocktail credited Walter DK Gibson with its invention. Apparently in an interview, his grandson said his grandfather had invented this cocktail at the Bohemian Club.

The Gibson cocktail

Ingredients:

50cl gin. A good gin for this cocktail is the Gin G’Vine Floraison.
3 drops of dry vermouth
1 pickled onion

Preparation:

  • Step 1:

Mix all ingredients (onion aside) in a tall glass with ice, mix vigorously and strain the resulting liquid into the martini glass.

  • Step 2:

Garnish the cocktail with a pearl onion in vinegar into the cup.

A variant in the preparation of Gibson cocktail is that instead of placing the Dry Martini with the gin, place it in the mixing glass with ice before gin. Then mix and put aside, without the ice that will take the aroma away, then pour the gin in the glass, mix and serve in martini glass with onions.

Some people add a squeeze of lemon to the final preparation before serving.
