The Gimlet Cocktail

TAGS:The Cocktail Gimlet is made with Gin (usually a Dry Gin, like Diplôme Dry Gin) and with neutral type of Vodka like the famous Smirnoff Red Label. Its name means “barrier” and has been associated with tools of drilling small holes. This cocktail is considered to be a ?barrier? because it penetrates every person who decides to try it.

This cocktail has been invented by Sir Thomas Gimlette, Admiral of the Royal Navy, who used to make this drink in order to generalize the consumption of lemon (and its vitamins) on the boat, to avoid scurvy.

The preparation of Cocktail Gimlet has some variants. The original recipe is:

  • 4 parts of gin,
  • 1 part of lime juice
  • and a slice of lemon to garnish the cocktail glass.

Another variant in the preparation of this cocktail is given by David A. Embury in 1958:

  • 2 ounces of gin
  • 1/2 ounce of lime juice
  • 1/4 ounce of simple syrup
  • 1 slice of lemon

While William L. Hamilton said in 2002 to a review in The New York Times that Gimlet Cocktail Recipe was:

  • 4 ounces of vodka
  • 1/2 lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounces of Lemon
  • Lemon slice for garnish

Gary Regan in the Bartender Bible presents the Gimlet Cocktail Recipe like that:

  • 2 ounces of Plymouth Gin
  • 1/2 ounce of lemon juice
  • Slice of lemon

As you can see the possible variations of this cocktail are numerous and you will have to try several to choose your favorite. You could even create your own, who knows?
The Gimlet cocktail is not that famous compared to others that have appeared in books and blockbuster movies, but some consider it as a martini good enough to find its public.

This cocktail can be pleasant in hot climate. It is very simple to prepare and everyone added with the passage of time the ideal proportions to balance the flavors. Many people drink it ?on the rock?, it is not recommended to add water.

How and what to drink with a vodka

Vodka is one of the spirits of Russian origin (its name literally means ?little water “), similar in its production to other high strength spirit. But it is unique in two things: in its most classic versions, it has absolutely no flavor nor odor.

This feature makes it an excellent raw material for the preparation of drinks and cocktails of all kinds. It is ideal for an alcoholic fruit juices, carbonated drinks, tonic water, etc. It is as well a fundamental ingredient in cocktails as well known as the Bloody Mary, Caipiroska, Cosmopolitan, Screwdriver, Gimlet, White Russian or Vodka Martini, among many others.

Actually, in countries where its production has more history, i.e., Russia, Poland and Baltic countries, the vodka is traditionally consumed only in small chilled glasses, and as an accompaniment to meals, probably because of its large ability to fight the cold winters of these geographic areas where the most classic and typical drink to accompany food are spirits and tea, not like in the rest of Central and south Europe where we drink beer and wine.

Besides “white” classic vodka, we must also emphasize the dissemination in recent times in the world, but for quite some time and the Slavic countries, of flavored vodkas, especially with lemon, berries, spices and other ingredients which give this distillate, the most consumed globally, a new air and sometimes even “chic ” touché in a market, with high alcohol graduation, highly competitive and where each day brings more news varieties.

What formats are the most common for bottles of spirits?

Sometimes, the different forms of bottles of spirits make us doubt about their volume. Can you buy whisky or vodka of different sizes? What are the most common?

For wine lovers it is not uncommon to find bottles of different sizes. The most used are the Magnum (1.5 liter) and 3/8 (375 ml or 37.5 cl), but we cannot forget that there are many other formats including the latest arrival, the Midas size.

However, in the case of spirits, there are not many standard sizes. It depends more on the imagination of the distillery. Another important aspect in spirits is the alcohol content: the higher the alcohol content, the higher taxes are, leading many brands to reduce their volume to maintain their prices.

The most common sizes of bottles of spirits

  • 70cl (standard size): the most frequent, almost all distilleries use it as a reference dimension, which is equivalent to 75 cl for wine.

After this bottle that is the standard classification, of least to most, here are the other common bottle sizes:

  • 4-5 cl: the size of the collectors of mini bottles. They can be sold in plastic (in general), although some brands also make glass. Perfect for a tasting. Some distilleries use 4 cl. and others 5 cl.
  • 200ml: Presented in classic pocket format is widely used by conventional brands of whisky.
  • 50cl: The format of these bottles is usually that of a bottle (glass or plastic), and is very common for American spirits like bourbon. It is also used as a standard for the size of some brands of premium gin.
  • 75cl: It is not common in Europe. It is mostly seen in duty free sales, in the United States.
  • 1 liter is normally used for the distribution, sale is widespread.
  • 1.5 liter: full size Magnum. It is widely used.
  • 1.8 liter: In Premium is of a size that is more fashionable, and is called Magnum (although the classic Magnum is the 1.5 – liter)
  • 3 liters: Used for special editions.
  • 4.5 liters: you can find a gift format, especially for whisky because it is a very popular in countries like the UK.

Did you know that all these sizes exist? What is your favorite? Today, we present different sizes of a great whisky, the Chivas:

After Shock, liquor for strong palates

For those who want new, strong, explosive flavors and always in small doses, there are some spirits with strong personalities. Today we present the After Shock, which for those who have not heard about it, it is a strong alcoholic drink that something have a different flavors (hence the name). Of course, it tastes cinnamon and pepper, which causes still more bitter taste.

It became commercially by 1987 in Britain and spread among British students looking for something strong and very fashionable. It should be noted that the color of the liquor is usually blue or red, and the bottle design is also really striking.

Therefore it is popularized to become a really cool drink. In appearance, both inside and in the outside of the bottle can resemble the Blue Tropic, but the taste really has nothing to do.

It has an alcohol content of about 40% no less! Often drunk in a shot glass. In Germany and England it is much more popular and in Spain it costs more to find a bottle, but it’s always possible to buy After Shock on beverage stores online. It is a good gift when invited to a dinner. Everyone will try some glasses after a heavy menu, because we’ll need it.

As we have noted, it has different flavors. We found the After Shock Blue, Blue color; it tastes like strong mint with pepper and cinnamon. And the Red one has a very similar flavor. This liquor can be mixed with other beverages and is used to make cocktails, just put a few drops of liquor mixed with fruit juice, some vodka, Malibu, whiskey or lime … to counter the powerful taste of After Shock. You know, if you like excitement, the After Shock is for you, always in moderation.

Did you know the After Shock? Then I’m sure you’re a fan, so today I offer the best price:

Caipiroska, refreshing cocktail with vodka

TAGS:In our series on cocktails, today we are going to discover the caipiroska, perhaps one of the least known, but just as tasty as the other ones, that is perfect for the hot summer we?re living.

In fact, it is less known because it is a variation of the better-known caipirinha. The only difference is that the main ingredient changes from cachaça to vodka. The caipiroska is made of lime juice, sugar and vodka. This last ingredient counters the acid and sweet taste of the lime.

It has been invented during the 80?s, when the caipirnha reached its maximum popularity in Brazil among the population, and the vodka maker, seeing that it was an interesting market, decided to change the basic ingredient of the famous caipirinha. This new drink also spread rapidly in the country but was consumed by a higher social class.

So the caipiroska is a glamorous cocktail, for those who like vodka but with a touch of acidity that gives this twist to the classic vodka combined with stronger and bitter taste.

Its elaboration is very simple, so that you can surprise your guests this summer and give them this vodka before or after dinner.

To make the cocktail, you have to first cut the lime or lemon to very small pieces, like when we have to make caipirinha. Throw it in a shaker and crush the lime in it to get the juice. Then add the sugar and ice (with small cubes). Then the vodka, and turn it on for a few seconds. Serve with a straw in a glass.

The caipiroska supports some variation, such as adding passion fruit or strawberry puree, adding a unique sweet flavor, and something exotic, which is going very well at any time of day, especially in hot weather.

An explosion of flavour, Manhattan cocktail

TAGS:In our series of cocktails the Manhattan is a classic. It pays a tribute to the Big Apple of New York, and is usually taken as an appetizer, both in the United States and in other countries where its consumption has spread.

The Manhattan mix whisky and red vermouth and a few drops of Angostura. We can garnish it with a cherry or a slice of lemon. We can find taste it dry or medium, or with a sweet touch. Due to its mix, it is usually a senior cocktail.

The origin of this cocktail is not very clear. In 1882 people would already talk about the perfect mix between whisky, vermouth and bitters. Although the stronger version is attributed to Jenny Jerome, Randolph Churchill?s wife, who invented this mixture into the New York City’s Manhattan Club in Manhattan itself, other sources attribute it to a bartender, and others to Colonel Joe Walker, that on a boat trip with some friends from New York accidentally mixed vermouth and whisky, and then perfected it.

In the ’40s, the Manhattan cocktail was prized by the stars in Hollywood. They would start to drink it in movies, adding a touch of glamour in this period of time. Today it is an international cocktail that you can find in many cocktail bars.

Some state that the Manhattan was originally made ??with rye whisky, but then were introduced other types of whisky. For its preparation, we have to mix the ingredients mentioned above in a shaker and then shake it right. Note that the Manhattan is served without ice in a martini glass, providing style to any type of moments, especially before dinner. But, depending on the country, it is also perfect for an ?after dinner? moment, enjoying a quiet chat with friends.

What is your perfect combination of whisky and vermouth for Manhattan? We recommend one:

How to taste whisky like an expert (III)

TAGS:We are still making a tour of Charles McLean tasting lessons. We only have the last two steps to look at. We now have to understand what do whisky connoisseurs value and talk about when they try a new drink.

The classification of whisky by region is closely linked to the last step. It is a classification that prepares you to understand the intrinsic characteristics of the whisky. The malts are classified by region of origin, and this is because the character of the whisky comes from there.

In Scotland, the original regional division was simply between whiskys made in the highlands and lowlands. But the Laundering Act of 1784 defined 17 counties as “Highland”. This was reinforced by an amendment to the law the following year, making the new layout of the Highland Line between Dumbarton and Dundee. The highland and lowland Whisky are now under different legal verifications. This means that the two regions produce a very different whisky. The Highland whisky was universally considered better than the Lowland whisky.

Finally we reached the fifth step for whisky tasting, which really helps us to understand what the region classification serves to: the classification of whisky flavour.

The flavour of whisky is one of the consequences of the production system and maturation of the whisky.

These special flavours that we love so much become a subject of study, analysis, and you will have a greater appreciation after learning how to taste a whisky. However experts are carefully selecting the tasting terminology they use to evaluate and describe each drink. There are tasters group and jury that exist in order to verify that each verdict is the most concrete. On the contrary, we only want to taste whisky to have fun. We can still use our own terminology in our tasting notes, which eventually will be discussed and shared with other friends who decide to run this activity with us.

If you want to buy whisky to meet with friends and organize a tasting, we recommend 2 with very different characters:
