Inevitably, the cold season is here, and what better than to take sit by the side of the chimney with a rich and strong drink, especially during Christmas. Here we give you 4 recipes for drinks that surely will chase the cold out of your body.

1. Winter Sun

Ingredients:

  • 60ml of mandarin juice
  • 15ml of lemon juice
  • 1 part triple dry (Cointreau)
  • 45ml of Vodka
  • Sugar to taste
  • A spig of rosemary

Preparation

  1. Pour the tangerine and lemon juices into an ice-free shaker.
  2. Add the vodka and triple dry and shake very well.
  3. Take a large glass and frost the edge with the help of some tangerine juice and sugar.
  4. Serve the mixture in the frosted glass and garnish with the rosemary.

2. Rothes Original

Ingredients:

  • 6 cl. Of The Glenrothes Select Reserve
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or gingerbread sugar to give it a spicy touch
  • 2 cl. Of dulce de leche
  • 1 drop of vanilla essence
  • ½ lime juice
  • 1 cl. Of liquid caramel

Preparation:

  1. Introduce all ingredients in a shaker with a little ice and shake very well until a homogeneous and fresh mixture.
  2. Serve in a low glass without ice.
  3. You can decorate the surface with a little-whipped cream.

3. Punch of Granada and Champagne

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups of pomegranate juice
  • 1 pear nectar
  • ¼ orange liqueur
  • 1 bottle of champagne

Preparation:

  1. Take a large pitcher and pour in the pomegranate juice, the pear nectar and the orange liqueur.
  2. Shake well to mix and then pour the champagne.
  3. Serve in short glasses with ice to taste.

4. The Mount Christ

Ingredients:

  • 15ml of orange liqueur
  • 15ml of coffee liqueur
  • 120ml of coffee
  • Whipped cream

Preparation:

  1. Pour the hot coffee and add the two liquors: coffee and orange.
  2. Cover the surface with a little-whipped cream.
  3. Enjoy!

What are the differences between a scotch and a bourbon?

When we talk about whisky it’s clear to almost all of us that we are referring to a grain distillate of ancient origin, whose current name comes from the Gaelic and literally means “water of life.” However, the uninitiated in this exciting world, sometimes find it difficult to differentiate between the different varieties that, for different reasons, geographic or process of elaboration, we can currently find in the market.

In the case of the so-called Scotch, or Scotch whisky, the thing is clear: it is the one made in Scotland based mainly on malted barley and following the standards of the Scottish Whiskey Order, which establishes, among others aspects, that it must be aged in oak barrels with a capacity of less than 700 liters and for at least three years, without adding substances other than water or caramel as a coloring agent. In addition, when bottled, they cannot have a graduation of less than 40 degrees of alcohol by volume.

So far all clear, but it turns out that, in addition, the barrels where the Scotch is aged must have been previously used to contain bourbon. And, what is Bourbon then? It turns out that its elaboration is also regulated by law, in this case the American.

Then, according to the Bourbon Federal Identity Rules, in order to be able to denominate an alcoholic beverage like that, its must -the mixture of grains in which its distillation is based on- have to contain at least 51% of corn. The rest can generally be malted barley, rye or wheat. The must has to be distilled in the United States and shouldn’t include any additives.

Its aging must be in oak barrels, usually white oak, in the American state of Kentucky, but this is not a necessary condition since bourbon has been produced elsewhere for a long time. It’s precisely the county of Bourbon that has given its name to this distillate, and is different from other American whiskeys in the use of corn as the main ingredient, since others are made with rye for the most part, and also in the filtration process, which in the case of Tennessee’s whiskey, is made with saccharine maple carbon, which gives a different flavor and aroma to Bourbon despite sharing almost all the same processing.

One would think that living for many years comes from living a healthy lifestyle, with a very well balanced diet and regular physical activity to maintain ones shape. However, although this should not be ruled out at all, the world’s longest-living people have admitted that alcohol is part of their daily diet and that, for them, it has helped them to live for such a long time.

Grace Jones is now the UK’s tenth-longest living person at 110 and has confessed that a small sip of whisky every night has been her most trusted secret to living for so long. “I never suffer from heartburn during the night and it’s the only thing I drink”, says Mrs. Jones, who has been practising this for 60 years. “Whisky is very good for your health. I started with the night sip when I turned 50 and I have not stopped for 60 years, and I do not intend to do it. The doctor told me to continue taking it because it is good for the heart”, confesses Jones.

And, certainly, it is not the first time that something like this has happened. We have already heard of a 102-year-old woman who credits beer for her longevity. We also have another woman over 100 who claimed that 6 gin & tonics a day have done her well while a 107-year-old Spanish wine producer claims that his long age is due to the benefits of wine he consumes daily.

Jones celebrated his birthday last September with his 78-year-old daughter and enjoyed pleasant company, food, drinks and, of course, his mythical drink of whisky. She was born on September 16, 1906 in Liverpool, in the United Kingdom, and has already received seven letters from the Queen of England. And, most likely, it will probably not be the last.

Irish Tea

Ingredients:

  •  45ml of Irish whisky
  • 120ml of hot tea
  • 1 slice of cinnamon

Preparation:

  1. Add the whisky to hot tea.
  2. Add the cinnamon slice and stir.

Caramel cocktail with ginger tea

  • 1 Vanilla and caramel Lipton Tea.
  • 200 ml of water.
  • 1 fresh ginger.
  • 1 ½ cup of evaporated milk.
  • 1 glass of white rum.
  • 1 cup condensed milk.
  • 2 vanilla sticks.
  • Mint leaves.
  • Mango cut into cubes.

Preparation:

  1. Add the water to a large pot with tea bag, ginger and evaporated and condensed
  2. milk.
  3. Boil for 2 minutes and turn off the stove.
  4. Strain the mixture and cool.
  5. Once cool, add the mixture to the blender and add the glass of white rum.
  6. Liquefy at high speed for one minute.
  7. Serve in cups and decorate with vanilla sticks along with mint leaves or mango cubes.

Smoked Souchong

Ingredients:

  • 120 cc infusion Dilmah Lapsang Souchong
  • 180 cc Hendrick’s Gin
  • 60cc ginger syrup
  • 60 cc grapefruit juice
  • 80 cc egg white
  • 1 gr Dilmah Lapsang Souchong

Preparation:

  1. Simply add the first 5 ingredients and shake them very well in a shaker.
  2. Add mixture to a teapot and let the last ingredients smoke for 20 seconds.
  3. Serve from teapot to a cup.

Matthew McConaughey: from Oscar to Whiskey

Don’t worry, we’re not saying that the good Matthew has left his career for whiskey. On the contrary, he has left the cameras for a moment to dedicate himself to directing. However, not in the conventional way as many actors do. Something very different: he has debuted as a director of commercials for the original company of Kentucky, in the USA. Wild Turkey Bourbon.

This collaboration was announced in August of this year, and originally McConaughey was first contacted by the sister company of Wild Turkey, Campari, to hire him as the face of the company. However, Matthew had other plans, as he offered to work with them but as a writer, director and star of the campaign.

“I wanted to take the whole project with my own hands,” McConaughey said at a press conference with Jimmy Russell and Eddie Russell, the father and son of the Wild Turkey team. “I would like to be responsible and an important part of the campaign and not just the face of it.”

Unveiled in September at the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn, New York, a mini-documentary of just 6 minutes was shown where the actor can be seen walking through the distillery tasting whiskey accompanied by the Russells. A shorter, 30-second ad, where you can watch The Hot 8 Brass Band in New Orleans, was launched nationwide in the United States as part of the global campaign.

That will be the first part of 3 more films that Matthew wants to do — as if it was a story divided into three acts. The actor will also be appearing in printed ads. The decision to bring McConaughey to the company and release him as the lead creative for the campaign was taken under the premise of reaching a younger audience, and although the actor admits that he does not have a strong record with whiskey, he says that he enjoys it a lot, as well as red wine.

Whiskey or whisky? The origin of the words

The word “whiskey” appeared in the early eighteenth century as the Gaelic translation of the Latin word aqua vitae for “water of life“. In the Celtic language, it is called uisge beatha, although the use of this term finds its roots several centuries ago. Although the distillation of whisky goes back to the ancient Celts, the first written references date back to the late fifteenth century when it was used by the Scottish monks as a medicinal drink.

In fact, whisky is one of the many terms adapted to the English spelling and pronunciation that was commonly used until the mid-1700s. There, you can see an equal use with no distinction between the words “whisky” and “whiskey”. Today, however, this additional “e” marks the difference. 

The differentiation that remains today between “whisky” and “whiskey” probably comes from the Irish desire by 1870 to distinguish themselves from Scottish distilleries, which at the time was considered a lower quality.

Nowadays, we understand Irish and U.S.-American distillates under whiskey with an “e”. While Irish whiskey is based on barley malt and experiences a triple distillation, the American one comes from corn and added wheat, rye or malted barley. Whisky mainly refers to Scottish products – Scotch whisky – but also includes whiskies from all around the world. The production of Scotch whisky and the Canadian ones (manufactured from rye and corn) are based on malted barley, in addition to those produced in countries such as Wales and Japan, inspired mainly from processes developed in Scotland.
And while whisky includes nearly all the nationalities, Scotch exclusively works for Scottish whisky products.

  3. Haggis. This is a landmark dish from Scotland, very traditional, and it%u2019s made out of meat, spices and oatmeal. It is usually accompanied with turnips and potatoes (neeps and tatties).   4. Veal. For this meat the Speyside malt whiskeys are recommended, as is the case of Dalmore 15 years old or a heavy and spiced Glenfiddich Rich Oak. Both of them fit the characteristics of this dish, enhancing the flavors of the meat.
  5. Blue cheese. An interesting combination is the blue cheese with a Lagavullin 16 years powerful, smoky and sweet.
  6. Chocolate. For a lot of people, the combination of chocolate and whiskey is perfect. You can try to combine chocolate desserts with some of Glenmorangie Signet. Its little touches of dark fruit, caramel, ginger and cinnamon will go just excellent with the taste of chocolate.

As a last tip, remember: when it comes to pairing with food, it is best to take the whiskey pure, without reducing it with water.

Traditionally, it was thought (we don’t know if mistakenly) that Canadian whiskeys were not too much quality. This seems to have changed, thanks to their new treatments and complex structure.

Formerly, Canadian whiskey was perceived by many as something tasteless, hence it came to be called “brown vodka”. This is partly because of the rules, a bit hard, of its production. For example, it was said that it included rye because many Canadians distillers began to use some rye to give “life” to their whiskey, made primarily from corn.

But, as we announced, this is changing since current whiskey is developed with treatments based on oak and a truly complex structure. One of the changes of this whiskey is due in part to the Americans, who have always played an important role in its history. Should be noted that the US are the largest buyer of Canadian whiskey, because of its proximity, and many of the biggest brands are owned by US corporations.
