The Cayuga and Seneca areas have their own areas within the Finger Lakes wine. This region is compared, both by climate, size and production, with the wine-growing area of the Rhine in Germany, as well as the flag because they both have the cultivation of the grape variety Riesling.
Most Finger Lakes vineyards are located on the slopes of the lakes, which is favorable for the vines, as the best sun exposure, and there is less risk of frost.
The AVA was founded in 1982 with an average of 60 wineries and Baco Noir grapes produced mainly, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Catawba, Cayuga White, Niagara, Noiret, Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Pinot Meunier, Pinot noir, Riesling, Rkatsiteli, Rougeon, Verdelet, Vidal Blanc and Viognier.
