One of the main wine-producing areas in Germany, formerly called Rheinpfalz, spans almost 23,400ha. between the Rheinhessen area (in the north) and France (in the south).

It's a long, narrow, 80-kilometre stratch of land about seven kilometres wide. In the north, the wines are fresh and light, and in the south they are round and warm.

In the northern half, Mittelhardt, the most prestigious vineyards are located. However, in the south, Südliche, significant improvements are being made. As an interesting note we must comment that the vineyard further south (Schweigener Sonnenberg) is on French territory. Together with the predominant Riesling, they emphasize the cultivation of Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Silvaner, Scheurebe, Gewürztraminer and Morio-Muskat.

In the north there is a wider cultivation of Riesling, and in the south the Queen Caste gives way to others. There are quite a lot of red grape vineyards, especially pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon or even merlot. Statistics say that 65% of the production is white and 35% is red.

These 'dry’ rieslings usually have between 4 and 10 grams of sugar per litre, which is not overly noticed, but which makes up for their acidity really well. It's actually quite difficult to find rieslings with less than 4 grams of sugar, although there are exceptions, like the 'ultra-dry' style of in the Alsatian Trimbach.
