Geography of Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepo Pavese
The Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepo Pavese area is located in the Oltrepò Pavese area, south of the Po river, and is characterised by a hilly landscape. The area is the meeting point of four important Italian regions: Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria and Emilia Romagna.
Grape varieties of the DOC Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepo Pavese
The Sangue di Giuda wine must be made from special grape varieties. To give a wine a DOC designation, it must consist mainly of the Barbera and Croatian grape varieties. Furthermore, it may contain a small proportion of the varieties Vespolina and Pinot nero, Uva rara.
- Barbera: The Barbera grape is a high-quality grape variety from Piedmont, which was already cultivated in the 13th century in the region of Monferrato. Today it is cultivated throughout Italy and is considered adaptable and offers high yields. In 2010, the area under this variety was 24,000 hectares. Outside Italy, the variety is cultivated in Argentina, California, Australia, Brazil, Greece, Israel, Romania, Slovenia, Uruguay and South Africa.
- Croatina: It is a red grape variety that also originates from Piedmont and has been known since the 9th century. This grape variety has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-pollinating.
Vespolina: A red wine variety also native to Piedmont. On 3 November 1789, this variety was first mentioned in writing in the Conte Nuvolone report.
- Uva Rara: Grown in Lombardy. The name Uva Rara (rare grape) does not refer to the rarity of its occurrence, but to the unbelievable beauty of the grape. The late-ripening variety produces light red wines with low acidity and medium alcohol content.
- Pinot Nero: This red wine variety is often called the king of red wines. Pinot Nero is a very old variety which probably existed 2000 years ago. This variety occupies 10th place in the worldwide grape variety ranking.
